This week, graduate students in my course are learning how to write about science for the non-expert public. For those of you who do this professionally, what tips would you offer?

Same as I tell young journalists: presume the audience is just as smart as you, but you know something they don't. That way, it makes it less likely you come across as condescending.

Also, the advice Hawkins got from his publisher for A Brief History of Time: for every equation, you lose half your readers.

I’m mad that on the whole it’s good advice, even though I love seeing an equation.
