"It is an editorial choice to center the stories about Biden almost entirely on the (agreed: abysmal) 90-minute debate rather than the record of an exceptionally effective administration with solid accomplishments from foreign policy to the economy to climate and the environment."

I mean, just growing a tiny Hitler moustache would be too on-the-nose.
Arizona delegate Joe Neglia hopes to inspire a new fashion trend at the convention: the white piece of paper he taped to his ear to mimic Trump’s bandage from the shooting on Saturday. “I’m breaking new fashion ground,” the 63-year-old said. Follow our live coverage: wapo.st/3WpXI0v

I don't know why so many reporters have joined the chorus of voices trying to kneecap Biden rather than pointing out the fascists trying to undo the Enlightenment. Maybe it's just that years of treating everything like a horse race has given them brain worms.

Reminder that, in 2011, I walked into then-Governor Rick Perry's press office, and the receptionist quickly tried to hide the book she was reading. It was about Nazi propaganda techniques. The GOP hasn't changed. It's just not hiding the reading list any more.

I loved Dandelion, a wonderful film about musicians, motivation, definitions of success, and bad audiences (plus the director told me it was partly inspired by @tedleo.bsky.social). Out now. www.austinchronicle.com/daily/screen...

This is a subtweet about Frankenstein because I don't want to be a dick, but I also want some facts out there. 1. Most novels at the time were anonymous. We can't make definite judgements about why Mary Shelley's name wasn't on it. It was common practice. The novel was barely respectable. 1/?

The pizza-eating scene is one of the funniest moments in modern American cinema. Jacques Tati level.
I’m telling you that this movie has literally changed my life. I was here and now I’m here. (Ok, I realize you couldn’t see my hands just then. But picture where my hands might’ve been.)

People who stay home this November are fellow travellers for fascists.
I know the latest NZ election outcome was less than good, but jesus.

Always a pleasure to chat with @monagle.bsky.social and @donatobomb.bsky.social about ... well, anything, but particularly overlooked movies. Bonus: hear our takes on Sony buying the Alamo, and I explain why I'm excited about Hellboy: The Crooked Man.

Imagine being Gen X and being raised on what the British considered kids' literature. "Congrats, you are eight. Here's Watership Down, The Lord of the Rings, The Man Who Would Be King, and Gerald Durrell warning you about the fragility of eco-systems."
Once again, in case you’re wondering why Gen Xers are “like this,” watch any Disney movie between Walt’s death & The Little Mermaid, the shit we were raised on. Tried to rewatch The Rescuers last night and it is utterly Bananapants that a single soul thought this was acceptable kids’ fare

I have been saying for yeeeears. People do not understand how deeply Republican leaders got brainworms from Watergate. They're still angry they lost Nixon. Not because they loved Nixon, but because they hate accountability. That's what this SCOTUS ruling is about.

If you stay home this November, or "protest vote," I will find you in whatever internment camp we're both in and ask, politely, how that worked out for you.

Janet Planet is probably wonderful if you grew up around Massachusets art hippies in the '90s, but there are slender pleasures here beyond that targeted nostalgia (even if Julianne Nicholson is intriguing as the titular Janet). www.austinchronicle.com/events/film/...

Recently, I was peer reviewing a paper, and it cited one of my papers. Except... it wasn't anything I had written. The title sounds like something I'd write. It included coauthors I work with, and was in a journal I've published in. But it wasn't real. AI is not good for science.

If Biden literally shat himself during one of the debates, his opponent would still be the guy openly vowing to send federal troops to take over cities, set up mass detention camps, and imprison his critics. The only sane position would still be Team Pants Shitter.
Also, with both candidates being elderly, one becomes more concerned about the people they hire to run the country. Biden’s people will be at worst, to riff on P.J. O’Rourke, wrong within normal parameters, while Trump’s people will be historically sociopathic. Not a close call.

Lot of people tonight dancing around the fact that Kinky Friedman's idiotic gubernatorial campaign helped keep Rick Perry as governor. You want to argue with me? I was there, covering that election.
