Pretty much. What it mostly boils down to is that most Americans really don’t have the faintest idea what living under modern authoritarian regimes actually looks like, and how it’s often at the same time way more boring and way more scary than they’d imagined.
But it's ~ok~ if your parents say its okay and your religious sect! (cringe) I think a lot of people just don't think about it, or hear about it in the media, so assume it doesn't happen. It's a horrible problem, too.
USians wholly think child marriage is something that happens in third world African countries and not something your own family may be involved in. It’s never presented as child marriage in the States. We like to use nice words when describing horrors.
