Pretty much. What it mostly boils down to is that most Americans really don’t have the faintest idea what living under modern authoritarian regimes actually looks like, and how it’s often at the same time way more boring and way more scary than they’d imagined.

There's no country on earth with a bigger differential in voting access by race. The most impacted group is Black voters. Etc For Black folk, the US has always been authoritarian by any reasonable definition. Even now, more US folk are mad about me spitting these facts, than the facts themselves.

Yes, absolutely applicable to the white US majority, not to the very large number of other Americans who absolutely recently have experienced authoritarian governments.

I think that's the core problem, though - white people have absolutely experienced it as authoritarian. As the authority / subject of rather than the object of. And there's denialism of that on the left (I am oppressed by class!) and embracing of it by three right.

To get a real sense of what America is, yes, there is this. And the rez, too. At Pine Ridge, for example, adult male life expectancy has been down to 47 years, yes, lower than Haiti. Violence and dispossession is still far too often what it means to be a person of color in this thing called America

USians wholly think child marriage is something that happens in third world African countries and not something your own family may be involved in. It’s never presented as child marriage in the States. We like to use nice words when describing horrors.

It's a great example to use. Because US life expectancy is lower for all demographics because of racism. Black folk get it the worst, but there's self-own blowback. Eg racist people are so angry at the idea that a Black person might get free healthcare, that they vote against it for themselves too🤷🏿‍♂️

And because Black people should have the *highest* life expectancy, barring societal and environmental racism.🙂🙃 We see this play out in the UK. The things that kill humans of old age are heart disease and cancer. A population that gets these at a lower rate, tends to live longer.

Part of it is in the indoctrination in our media. Media tends to depict blacks disproportionately in criminal behavior. Additionally, it trends towards making Cops, and others in authority to generally be idealized paragons. Or at least mavericks.

That was my immediate thought as well.
