Latest post looks at Russian attacks on Ukrainian society - and in particular health care and energy supplies - and sees patterns from the Syrian war. The aim is to coerce Ukraine into surrender but while it undoubtedly hurts it shows no sign of having that effect. open.substack.com/pub/samf/p/l...

A senior NATO official said today that Russia's sabotage campaign across Europe is a "more concerted, more aggressive effort, than what we’ve seen certainly since the Cold War...we’re seeing sabotage, assassination plots, arson — real things that have cost human lives,” CNN reports.

A huge weight has been lifted. Yes, there is a lot to do. Yes, the new UK government will get a lot wrong. Yes, it will piss me off regularly. Yes, the UK itself will remain beset by problems. But, at last, decent people are in charge. No grifters, culture warriors or charlatans. That feels so good!

Oh this press conference is such a joy to watch. Just a completely different tone and level of detail than what we've had for the past five years. Really highlights how badging both Sunak and Starmer as technocrats was always nonsense.

Making Vallance minister of state is extremely interesting. They must have been talking with him for some time. He's a friend of an ex colleague and I had no idea he has political interests.

Between 10-12 million voted for Rassemblement National in the first round of the French elections, more than any party has ever received in the first round of legislative or presidential elections. Something is very wrong in France.

There is something just *exquisite* at watching Sunak’s reaction as he realises he’s been completely outplayed by Starmer. Like a person who suddenly receives incontrovertible evidence the world is not in fact flat.

New Conservative attack line captures everything that is wrong with the last century Tories. Starmer’s partner is not an appendage to his career. She has a job. While she’s doing that job she is also caring for a kid going through GCSEs.
