I may now be obsessed with the fact that freshwater crabs 🦀 (Potamon fluviatile) proliferated in late Roman sewers & now archaeologists & conservationists are fighting to save these little guys as an indigenous species, who live in places like Trajan’s Forum. www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/riv...

Great to hear. This reminds me of the plants in the colosseum. The number of species has changed over time from a height of 420 recorded species in the 1850s to 243 species in the 1990s, due to conservation practices. the-colosseum.net/wp/en/the-ro... (NB: There may be more recent figures)
