There's a meme going around that other place that asks for a perfect 90s album that isn't by Nirvana or Alice in Chains.
I submit to you:
Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend
Tricky's Maxinquaye
The Afghan Whigs' Gentlemen
The Afghan Whigs' 1965
Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes
REMAutomatic for the People...
I woke up with the need to add the La's self titled debut, even if Lee Mavers hated it. I bought it on cassette at Tower Records and wore it down to nothing.
There was a fascinating semi-long form article a few months back based around interviews with the recording engineer that worked with/Tricky on Maxinquay. He claims to have done a lot of the work due to Tricky being Tricky & who knows but it was a fun look into what the Tricky’s like personally
Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea was released in 2000, so recorded in the 90s, and I say it qualifies, mostly because You Said Something has lived in my head rent free for 24 years
Goddammit PJ, what did they SAY
like i love nirvana and aic but, uh, the entire pre-breakup discography of pixies that is responsible for all those other bands forming, just to start?
With ya in principle though Rosa and Doolittle were 80s albums.
(side note: saw it live on an early reunion tour in 2005ish when Surfer Rosa finally went gold and the band got their record -- to their surprise -- on stage outside Baltimore)
agreed but the pixies have an absolute perfect start to finish track listings on like three outta four of the albums they released, it's wild. surfer rosa, doolittle, AND bossanova! insane!
