There's a meme going around that other place that asks for a perfect 90s album that isn't by Nirvana or Alice in Chains. I submit to you: Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend Tricky's Maxinquaye The Afghan Whigs' Gentlemen The Afghan Whigs' 1965 Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes REMAutomatic for the People...

Jump, Little Children's Magazine The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill REM's Out of Time De La Soul is Dead OK Computer...

PJ Harvey's Rid of Me and also To Bring You My Love. Suede's Coming Up.

I said Maxinquaye but I'll also add Pre-Millenium Tension. They used to call me tricky kid

I woke up with the need to add the La's self titled debut, even if Lee Mavers hated it. I bought it on cassette at Tower Records and wore it down to nothing.

I would suggest Live's Throwing Copper.

Tom Waits' Bone Machine Portishead's Dummy Eels' Electroshock Blues Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville

But no Portishead? For me they go together.

I saw Tricky live, and it was his birthday. The drummer got so tired he left and came back.

Maxinquaye is a great album, and not only because "Aftermath" samples Blade Runner / Sigue Sigue Sputnik. :)

I did all my best making out to Tricky and Portishead.

I live the life they wish they did. I was going to list all his 90s works but they were already represented.

Love to see the Tricky love here! Surprisingly to me at least he was an amazing live act when I saw him touring I think for Angels With Dirty Faces

There was a fascinating semi-long form article a few months back based around interviews with the recording engineer that worked with/Tricky on Maxinquay. He claims to have done a lot of the work due to Tricky being Tricky & who knows but it was a fun look into what the Tricky’s like personally

I'm going to be the outlier and raise that Is This Desire? is Harvey's best 90s album.
Avatar
That’s my favorite of her 90s work, too. Sorely underrated, but lives on my list of perfect albums.💜
Avatar
Harvey has made so many great albums but Is This Desire? was hauntingly good.

Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea was released in 2000, so recorded in the 90s, and I say it qualifies, mostly because You Said Something has lived in my head rent free for 24 years Goddammit PJ, what did they SAY

Jump, Little Children! Great pick. Also De La Soul.

like i love nirvana and aic but, uh, the entire pre-breakup discography of pixies that is responsible for all those other bands forming, just to start?
Avatar
jesus, kurt cobain would have laughed himself sick at that

grabbing a copy of surfer rosa and jamming it around their neck like a circus bear's ruffle
Avatar
This is the image that'll come to mind from now on when I hear "Here It Goes Again" by OK Go
Avatar
With ya in principle though Rosa and Doolittle were 80s albums. (side note: saw it live on an early reunion tour in 2005ish when Surfer Rosa finally went gold and the band got their record -- to their surprise -- on stage outside Baltimore)
Avatar
Agreed! Though to be fair, not every great album by a great band is perfect start to finish. There are plenty where I skip a track or two.
Avatar
agreed but the pixies have an absolute perfect start to finish track listings on like three outta four of the albums they released, it's wild. surfer rosa, doolittle, AND bossanova! insane!
Avatar
trompe le monde has a little filler but i'll allow it
Avatar
Doolittle is always and forever my Pixies jam but those are all worth listening to.
