The @npr.org Tiny Desk concert with Juvenile is bar none the best one, as is the story of how it came to be: fans asked him to do one, he said (literally) "WTF is a Tiny Desk and no!", and then after much begging, assembled an amazing collection of musicians, and history was made.
The Booty-Shaking Anthem That Still Endures, 25 Years Laterwww.nytimes.com Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up” was a 1999 hit that brought twerking and New Orleans bounce into the mainstream. Here’s the story of how it became a sensation.

My most beloved nerds: who is the best person to talk to in the bioethics realm about privacy after death. As in: after you die, who has the right to know things about your body/health/biology? What protections exist and/or should exist?

I'm running for reelection on the NASW board! It's been such a bright spot in my professional life serving for the last two years, and there's still a lot I'd like to do. We'll have a meet-and-greet for members later in the summer, but happy to chat and answer Qs any time.
NASW Members: Meet the journalists, writers, and media professionals running for our 2024-2026 NASW Board of Directors election. Then stay tuned for voting instructions and virtual meet-and-greet event details later this summer: www.nasw.org/article...

The person who laid me off in a very unkind way was let go unexpectedly last week, so I think I deserve a little treat. 💅

Back from vacation, which included a 15-hour ascent of Washington's Mt. Baker. My partner and I started at 2:30 AM on the solstice and were physically tied together on the ice for 11 hours. I think I microtore every muscle in my legs. Ahhh, so restful. 😊

I swear, the second I have to come up with subheadings for my stories, I forget every single word in the English language.

Did you know that many tribes have websites that have information about their tribes? Many also now include a media guide for journalists. The latest to include a media guide is the Wabanaki alliance: www.wabanakialliance.com/style-guide/

🧪One last bump for this request. I spoke with a lovely computational chemist this morning, but where are my ecologists? Cancer biologists? Geneticists? Climate change scientists? I know y'all here on Bluesky aren't living under a rock. How have your personal experiments with Chat-GPT gone?
🧪 #journorequest: Are you a scientist thinking critically about how your intellectual property is being leveraged to train AI? Are you reading this and thinking that maybe you should be? I'd love to chat with you for a story in Nature.

🧪Re-upping this request. I appreciate everyone who has RT'd it, but I'm still looking for some people to speak with. I'd also be keen to speak to people working in a uni's IP office.

Did a training jaunt up Colorado's Mount Wilson over the weekend. Haven't been up above 12,000 feet in a while and the altitude kicked my butt, but overall it felt much smoother than my last visit in 2021. Mount Sneffels in a few weeks and then on to Baker!

🧪My own brush with end-of-life caregiving during grad school was one of the most challenging experiences I've ever gone through. Glad to see the National Academies bringing attention to what is ultimately something we will all have to go through in one way or another.
US National Academies report outlines barriers and solutions for scientist carerswww.nature.com Carers need better support from employers, such as paid parental leave, subsidized childcare and relief for other types of caregiving. But is there will among institutions to provide it? Carers need b...

My god, @nytimes.com, can you *please* send reporters to Utah to report on resorts OTHER than those owned by Under Canvas? I get it---glamping is sexy---but Under Canvas does not have great relationships with many of the communities they exist in and we do not need to keep sending them business.
Glamping With the Starswww.nytimes.com Would cloudy weather ruin a visit to the first-ever resort to receive certification from DarkSky International? A stargazer in Utah holds on to her optimism.

🧪Thank you to everyone who reached out. I had less than 24 hours to turn this one around, so I wasn't able to get in touch with everyone, but I finally feel like I'm starting to rebuild my old community of friendly science folks from the bad place.

So thrilled to see this story out. I remain skeptical about the AI gold rush we're living through, but there is good that can be accomplished when we foster honest conversations about our needs. More than most, this story could only be because people were willing to have those conversations with me.
