They are quite a bit different from most of the non-lady slipper orchids I know.

Those are gorgeous, Heather. I've seen large patches of lady slippers here (and they're beautiful), but they're not the showy type. I'm going to have to take a quick trip to NC or TN (the southern end of their range closest to me) to see if I can find some.
