Reskeet with how old you are, using a vague proxy: I still buy songs on the iTunes Store

I am 3 TV channels old

I thought the Tim Conway/Harvey Korman dentist sketch was hilarious the night it aired

Carol Burnette/Mary Tyler Moore/Newhart was the original must see TV.
Avatar
"the night it aired" is the key cuz I mean, come on, who has seen that sketch and not died laughing

How about Netscape Navigator 1.0 on a floppy disk

also, I still call it the "iTunes Store" too!
Avatar
Apple still calls it the iTunes Store even though it's within the Apple Music app
Avatar
well, I still call the app "iTunes", then, even if it's now the "Apple Music" app!
Avatar
itunes store itself offers the icq uh oh sound for a chime for your text messages, in case you want to be one of the silly millennial nerds making dead pop culture references like I am. bsky.app/profile/benn...
Yes it is. Search iTunes Store.

I've got an Android, but that's been my text alert for years. Sometimes people think it's a funny sound, but they almost never get the reference.

Never understood the distinction
Avatar
Apple just renamed iTunes to "Music" on macOS to match the "Music" name used on iOS. It's not really a distinction so much as a re-branding.

The local Librarian was our search engine.

I tried to use a "card catalogue" as an example and students stared at me like I was an alien

Ah yes the holiday Wish Book was required reading.
Avatar
It was the paper version of Amazon. Life was much slower back then.

I know someone who grew up on a Sears catalogue house!

In 1977 my dear wifey and I ordered a mattress from the Sears catalogue. We were living in Dawson Creek, BC at the time.

My parents wouldn't let me stay up to watch the president announce his resignation on TV. It was past my bed time.

Hell yeah, I want to be able to listen to stuff without it getting yanked by a streaming service, with poor connectivity in the middle of nowhere and/or on planes with no wifi. Relying only on streams completely baffles me. (Also, I hope the artist gets more $ from a download vs. streaming.)

I still refer to recording anything on Hulu as “taping it” like it’s a VCR.

Yep. In fact, most of my purchases are for (*creaking old limbs*) whole albums! I have an old laptop that has a way older OS so I still have the old store and can ignore the new Spotify-ish way of things there.

My last resume before becoming a stay-at-home mom includes the boast that I am proficient on Lotus 1-2-3.

I don’t miss Lotus Notes.

I learned how to program in its collaborative software when I worked in the DocuMerge dept at Progressive Insurance. Our team mostly programmed in COBOL.
Avatar
I’m not well-versed in programming or coding but I DO know that COBOL refuses to die. Only because my son codes and he happened to bring it up. Go figure.

I used to pity the people with only 300 baud modems since mine was 1200 baud.

I had to watch Neil Armstrong on our neighbor's blurry black/white TV because we didn't have one

ok but that’s legit cool that you saw it live

Party line phones (Honest and true! Don't even have a land line now, never mind a shared one)
Avatar
I’d never heard of party line phones until I moved to Wyoming in 1993. My boss lived out on a ranch & they had a party line shared with 2-3 other ranches.
Avatar
My family had one. We got a private line after dad had his 1st heart attack. I was 11 & needed to call the ambulance & 2 girls were on the line & wouldn’t get off. Dad had to get on the phone to tell them to get off so I could call. Haven’t thought about that in years! 😳

I saw JFK on the day he was shot when I was 10 years old.
Avatar
I remember asking my dad on the day of JFK’s funeral why there was a horse with no rider (on TV - we were in Hawai’i).
Avatar
I do too, but I'm detecting that I may be in a minority there with my cohort.
