I’m not sure if you covered it elsewhere, but I’m assuming it’s not possible to build more suits of the current design? I know they’re old, but the design as been working for decades and seems like it would be a good placeholder until the new ones are tested.

I covered it (briefly) in the latest newsletter/video! Basically they can but it would be cost prohibitive -- $250 million for JUST the life support unit because the tech is so old. They just don't have the money for that.

I'm a bit confused, because I saw a CNN interview with Mike Massimino the other day, and he reallly downplayed the entire spacesuit situation. According to him, the problem was with the umbilical and not the suit himself. Was he doing damage control for NASA?

We haven't gotten an official update on what's wrong with the spacesuits (though I believe and trust Mike, and he's one to speak his mind) -- that's likely coming at a press conference in 15 min. The point of the piece/video is more there's a larger spacesuit problem.
