Decades as an engineer taught me that troubleshooting is exponentially more difficult after you burn up the test article. The extension is an invaluable opportunity.

these 2 statements from the CNN article don't reconcile for me

The bottom line is that Starliner does Have problems but in the service module, which doesn’t return to Earth. The vehicle is safe for re-entry.
