I think a lot of this discourse is downstream from the notion that Trump is some mastermind with a finger on the pulse of the public, rather than a very beatable, unpopular extremist who won over a flawed opponent in 2016
He has the pulse of those he needs to win. (Woman to Adlai Stevenson: "You will have the vote of every intelligent persons." Stevenson:"Madam, I need a majority of voters."
