One of the most heartbreaking details we learned from Uvadle is that the kids were being quiet because that’s what they’d been trained to do. You hear the earliest cops to arrive repeatedly telling each other there must not be kids in those classrooms because they didn’t hear any crying.

Active shooter training at work was mostly about how there’s nothing much you can do so just don’t scare any cops who might arrive by screaming or crying.

I've said this before, but the the Zionist/anti-Zionist axis is less useful right now than the "sick of Israel's shit"/"not yet sick of Israel's shit" axis, if the goal is to stop the slaughter in Gaza. Yep. Especially after the last few weeks in particular, for a group of students that studied through a pandemic, the ritual of being able to gather with their peers one last time is probably especially meaningful.

commencements etc can be boring or tedious or whatever. but they are also *rituals*, shared experiences that enmesh a sense of belonging, can serve as an emotional marker and indeed even a reward for having gone through something. we are failing to understand this just like we misunderstand grief.

Also, let me just say that the absolutely most terrifying people I’ve encountered in my criminal law career are not murders or rapists or even child molesters, but the career con artists, who are extraordinarily articulate and charming and also terrifyingly dead behind the eyes.
