After a disastrous response to the category 1 storm, #Houston residents are left asking how the city could be so unprepared for a hurricane, and how much worse things could get. New today from Correspondent Dylan Baddour:
Hurricane Beryl Was a Warning Shot for Houstonwww.texasobserver.org The category 1 storm dealt the city disastrous damage. Houston’s first direct hit from a hurricane in decades showed how vulnerable the nation’s energy capital remains.

In a state ruled by Republicans, the answer to "How much worse can things get?" is "Yes."

Yes. I mean, 'leadership' is *always* the first place to look in disasters like this. How could they be so unprepared? I mean, how is this even a question!

Biden: Hey, it looks like you've got a nasty storm headed your way in three days. Do you need emergency aid? Gov Abbot: *multiple calls ignored, goes to voicemail in Japan* Lt Gov Patrick: *call ignored, goes to voicemail* (Beryl savages Texas) Abbot & Patrick: WHERE WAS BIDEN?!?!
The request for federal aid after Beryl opens a rift between the White House and Texasapnews.com President Joe Biden said he tried tracking down Republican Gov. Greg Abbott to get the state to formally request a major disaster declaration that unlocks federal aid.

Seriously, Biden should have recorded himself calling Abbot about 20 times and leaving messages offering assistance. Then put the supercut up on tiktok.

Have the Houston residents realized they live in Texas, where the state policy is to never prepare for shit (especially not things literally any intelligent person could have predicted?)

I’m not even blaming any of the residents either. The fash party has done their damndest to ensure that no matter what not a single sane/responsible politician will ever gain any actual influence/power. It’s just that the question people are asking has a very obvious answer

Have you guys heard anything from Allred? One would think that someone running against a person famous for fleeing the last disaster in this city would step up.

he's reposted a bunch of info about cooling centers and water distribution on facebook, but i've seen nothing else from him about Beryl on any other social media :/

Ugh that's disappointing. His most recent YouTube ads are catering way too much to conservative bs, too, imo. I get the man has to fold a bit to peel off votes from Cruz in this state but I'm really starting to worry about his priorities.
Avatar
The border ads in particular are frustrating to say the least. I’m sure he has tons of experienced advisors telling him that’s the best plan for election, but I still don’t like it lol
Avatar
That's exactly the ones I'm getting that rub me the wrong way. I mean they might as well be coming from Cruz. I'm not sure why he thinks they'll help. Anyone who wants that tone is going to go ahead and vote a straight R ticket and keep Ted. Everyone else wants more nuance.

From the article: “When it comes to the politics of climate change, if you don’t have a plan for Houston, you don’t really have a plan,” Levy said. “It’s hard to imagine an energy transition occurring without the energy industry in Houston participating.” It's hard to imagine TX getting on board.
Avatar
I’m confident that (what’s left of) Texas will, eventually, get on board. Just not likely in my lifetime.

Maybe if Texans didn't spend all their time talking shit about the government and actually provided it the resources it needs they wouldn't have these problems.
Avatar
Don't blame the victims here. Texans are the ones providing each other the resources they need right now, because our state government is willfully deserving all the shit-talk for their gross ineptitude and corruption.
Avatar
Because we don’t prepare for these things.
