AI in video games would just create those generative games where it’s endless levels of remixed elements that get boring and feel pointless. A list of the best games of all time are generally things with very specific choices being made.

The thing is, there are enough procedural aesthetics in game design that you can distinguish between Good and Bad algorithmic level generation, or at least have non-stupid arguments about it. But it’s the opposite of Nintendo’s particular aesthetic, which is all about the hand-crafted and bespoke.

As an analogy, if Brian Eno said his next album of songs was going to have AI-generated instruments, I’d at least be cautiously optimistic; if Randy Newman did the same, I’d be horrified. You’re the one who knows how to concatenate all the clichés, buddy! That’s what we pay you for!
