making your whole personality about the staunch refusal of anything—gods, booze, civil rights, trans people, disney star wars, whatever—is one of the least interesting things you can do with an incarnation.
I would just throw out there that most people who make their entire personality about not drinking are people who would be incapable of living anything resembling a life if they didn't do that. That's a car of people really doing what they need to survive; feel free to ignore them.
i know a lot of addicts in recovery & while it’s always critical & central to them, there’s a difference between the necessary self-denial of recovery &, like, temperance evangelists performatively smashing up bars.
no shade to folks focused on their own sobriety to survive.
I think anyone who has an instinct to lump that in with bigotry against trans people should really think about why they approach this topic in that way.
since fascists define themselves by staunch refusal of many things, anti-fascism is counter to that. “anti-fascism” is a reductive misnomer in that what it stands for is inclusion & liberation. when it doesn’t, when anti-fascists have nothing in their lives except refusal, they can be exhausting.
I was always vaguely aware of this fact, but I realized just how destructive it was recently when having a conversation with somebody who proudly announced their hatred of basically ALL pop music and droned on about, so proud of themselves, and absolutely driving everybody else to tears if boredom
