5 years ago, when I was on the D15 Community Education Council (Park Slope to Sunset Park to Red Hook), we helped pass a historic diversity plan to change admissions procedure at the district's middle schools. We were told that we would chase families out of the system. Our critics were wrong.
What Happened When Brooklyn Tried to Integrate Its Middle Schoolswww.nytimes.com A new report found that many schools enrolled more racially and socioeconomically diverse groups of students without sparking a major exodus of families from public schools.

I was quoted in Reason losing my patience with a guy during a Town Hall Q&A. (Pictured in the article was then DOE Chancellor Richard Carranza.)

Fucking get their asses (also, what was the asterisk for?)
Avatar
my quote was originally misattributed to Neal Zephyrin (the author hated the diversity plan but was a responsible journalist and grateful for the correction)

In the original article, fact checkers required they add the asterisk behind Charles Star and a footnote: * Enormous penis, total chad.

there is no way i can credibly challenge "enormous penis" and let's just leave that ambiguous

Having gone through it that first year with my own D15 child, it was clear at the time that it was the right thing to do, and long overdue. My only gripe with the experience was that the website the DOE rolled out for MS selection wasn't close to ready that year. It was bad.
Avatar
my son went through it that year too but i admit that my wife (who was part of the WXY process) handled the application process so i can't speak for the website. sorry that it sucked (sincerely!)

I was on D2 CEC and for some of us D15 was a siren song of hope we desperately tried to implement, but for others opposing it was the gateway to selling their souls to the devil and their purpose in life is now to use the DOE to make Black, brown, and trans kids and their parents miserable.

It would be sooo nice if D2 CEC did good instead of the awful its majority is set on pushing out into the world.

I never met a more vile set of humans in real life. Ultimately it is the chancellor who continues to capitulate to them - they just reinstated Manhattan priority on 5 D2 high schools - better than before but still designed to hoard opportunities.
Avatar
And I will say we got a fair amount of good done despite them for a bit - but they have and continued to harm to many people.
Avatar
Hoarding is a great way to describe it.
Avatar
at the time i referred to PS 321 as a gated community

There’s a straight line from white people say they want to preserve a school’s culture to Maud Maron.

Textbook “opportunity hoarding”

You have made your community a better place. Also, get their asses

So proud to be joining the D15 CEC this year. You all laid an amazing foundation five years ago. The whole city should follow suit IMO

good luck! I'm retrospect themost important thing we regularly do is work as a liaison between principals and Facilities. imo it's the easiest path for practical impact on a single-term time frame.

Also don’t engage the haters on the merits. They are nihilist demagogues who can’t be reasoned with.

It’s been great for my kids in D15. Thank you!

this is impressive considering it's burned into my brain how segregated the schools where in Park Slope when I lived there in the early 2000s
Avatar
I remember this! I lived in sunset park at the time and it was the talk of my building. Thank you for your advocacy!

We didn’t! One of our neighbors was on the community board and would fill us all in- her wife was a teacher in park slope and we were all very invested in better education in the community.

“The city’s public school enrollment has dropped as families leave or move to charters…” I fear that will never be reversed anywhere in the US.
