#UncoolTwo50 #ALT50 "DAY 3" 1978 THE JAM 'DOWN IN THE TUBE STATION AT MIDNIGHT' UK UK #15 "too many right-wing meetings" My favourite Jam single and probably my favourite thing Paul Weller ever did. it is very hard to do 'story' singles as evocatively as this. www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4oi...

Weller has so many top class singles it would be unfair for me to pick any at all

I have a different Jam single plus a Paul Weller single in my top 20. No doubt with so many quality singles the vote will be fractured and the individual singles be lower than expected

The line you quote always bothered me. How many right-wing meetings would be the correct number, and what would that smell like?

Isn't it just poetic licence, not a literal "smell" (I mean, I can imagine the pub smell is literal, but Wormwood Scrubs is already figurative and he's just extending that)?

Of course, but I still think it's clunky. And don't get me started on the flat wine

Yeah, *that* is the bit that always bugs me :)

On the ILX forum there is a 300 post thread about these lyrics which ends up with someone asking Bruce Foxton about them (“no idea mate” is the gist)

Superb. Isn't "no idea mate" one of the lyrics as well?

Sparkling wine? With curry? Proves your point that story songs are not easy. My two favourite Jam songs are both more sketches than songs (and lyrically flawless) - That's Entertainment and the one on my shortlist.

My last pick today is a better (and shorter) story song :)
