As a constitutional scholar, I am well aware of the serious headwinds and challenges facing the US on the nation's birthday. It will be bad, whatever happens in the Fall elections. But I also know enough US history that resistance is not futile and we have many historical models of it.

But also resistance doesn't yield results overnight or in a few months or years. Reclaiming reproductive rights and voting rights will take my whole generation and beyond. 2/2

What must it have been like to be a Black Union vet in 1895, watching all of those doors forced open with the blood of your friends being nailed shut again?

That's kind of what I think of. A black person could've been born in 1880 a few years after reconstruction ended, lived a full 75 year life, and passed away days before Brown v Board. But their life was not futile despite that.
