I like Mastodon, but you have to understand what it is to appreciate it, and the best way of doing that is to understand open source.
Open source is the best option when you want the source to be open.
When you want slick UI and UX, you go commercial.
"Jank tolerance" is a key factor.
I’m pro open source but can you clarify why you can only understand Mastodon by understanding open source?
Obviously Bluesky stems from a commercial entity, but most of the protocols and services appear to be open: github.com/bluesky-social
