man i hate the mastodon/bluesky fighting
Avatar
mastodon rocks. bluesky rocks. i'm happy both exist.
Avatar
It's objectively nice to have two non-terrible places to hang out.
Avatar
i wish there were less snark about mastodon here, i see it a lot and i don’t get it… both protocols have such good things in them
Avatar
I think it has less to do with Mastodon itself and more to do with some of its more obnoxious users.
Avatar
i mean yeah but bluesky also has some incredible losers and if there’s any discourse about it on mastodon i certainly haven’t seen it here there are tons of people tossing off “mastodon sucks” jokes
Avatar
One major difference is that in Mastodon some of the bigger drama sources are admins of whole servers. They can, and often do, cut off whole other servers for even the smallest of infractions of their sometimes arbitrary rules. To my knowledge, there is no real equivalent of that over here.
Avatar
i see. ironically, the problem arises because of centralization of power in an equally post-mad population
Avatar
There is no equivalent because there is only Bluesky. Wait until federation opens up then let's see what happens.
Avatar
Depends on whether the bsky team follows through on releasing enough of the protocol code to where people can start running their own servers.
Avatar
Still, you can find a server culture that works for you and avoid those engaged in whatever drama you aren't interested in. I appreciate both platforms but do really like the idea of an ad-free, surveillance-free option. But I do find it hard there to find what I'm looking for. This gets closer.

1) A lot of it comes down to initial experience when folks tried to join Masto. It’s nowhere near as easy to integrate into (onboarding is much improved but still high-friction) and there was a lot of frustration trying to make it like standard social media when it was designed intentionally not to.
Avatar
2) Decentralization means there’s **way** more variation in experience depending on who you are and where you start off. And there’s no denying that there are a lot of folks with entrenched culture/interests there that are actively against change.
Avatar
Like the loser who followed me and tried to convince me that it was Islamophobic to say that Hamas would rule a sovereign state of Palestine theocratically, hates Jews, and wants to kill Jews. This was after October 7.
Avatar
You can't just browse a new social network that you haven't even customized for 15 minutes, find a few opinions that are awful and offensive or awful and annoying to you, and declare that the network sucks. You have to give it hours and hours of use before writing it off, in my opinion.
Avatar
the protocol is mostly not the issue, it’s the people. the culture over there is vastly, VASTLY worse. if you were harangued, browbeat, well-actually’d and comics book guy’d, CW-harassed every time you posted anything other than a sunset pic… you’d have something to say about it to
Avatar
yeah there are bad people here too and they are *way* easier to avoid
Avatar
The experience there is not one thing in the same way that it is here. At least, my experience does not match your description. Probably has to do with choosing a tiny, nerdy, trans-friendly instance, and maybe the topics I choose to post about. Have had (and observed) far more unpleasantness here.
Avatar
yeah it doesn’t have to do with your instance at all. if you post about about a lot of topics and get any amount of reposts whatsoever, it happens. this is really uniform experience across all the people i know using mastodon who aren’t exclusively posting art. that’s it.
Avatar
Molly you can’t be like this on the internet. It’s illegal.
Avatar
Agreed. I get tired of seeing the "Highlander!" discourse on both apps. "There can be only one!". No. Nope. You can use as many different apps as you like, for different reasons or similar ones. I use both- for very different reasons and purposes. But keep your bridge out of my business.
Avatar
A lot of times when I see a "difference between" post, it's something that isn't very different on the other one.
Avatar
My approach (very broadly speaking-- of course there's overlap) is: Mastadon- nerdy stuff Bluesky - funny stuff I try not to fight either place, though sometimes I'll recognize someone who was once mean to me on usenet and grimace in their general direction.
Avatar
Avatar
Isn’t the idea that eventually they will work together?
Avatar
Yes, and it's in the works already. Which is making many dweebs very very angry.
Avatar
Avatar
On Mastodon side I can understand why. Because it's full of Mastodon users. On Bluesky side - I don't know. I expected more openness from Bluesky users.
Avatar
As long as I can keep using Bluesky the way I already do and don’t have to learn what an “instance” is or any of that other nipple-teeth garbage, I don’t care.
Avatar
I'm patiently waiting for the self-hosted version of BlueSky. In the meanwhile I'm cross-posting from my AP-powered server.
Avatar
Mastodon toots. Bluesky skeets.
Avatar
Like, if people want to fight : go shit on Threads, there's plenty of fash and transphobes there!!!!

Reminds of this line about academic infighting: "It is so vicious because the stakes are so low."
Avatar
The fighting is ridiculous. Both have their purpose! Bluesky when I want some Twitter nostalgia. Mastodon when I want to use something that is stupid and works bad. 💙💜
Avatar
I like Mastodon, but you have to understand what it is to appreciate it, and the best way of doing that is to understand open source. Open source is the best option when you want the source to be open. When you want slick UI and UX, you go commercial. "Jank tolerance" is a key factor.
Avatar
this reads like a parody of a ubuntu guy tweet
Avatar
I’m pro open source but can you clarify why you can only understand Mastodon by understanding open source? Obviously Bluesky stems from a commercial entity, but most of the protocols and services appear to be open: github.com/bluesky-social What have I missed?
bluesky-socialgithub.com bluesky-social has 12 repositories available. Follow their code on GitHub.
Avatar
Nothing at all, that's exactly right.
Avatar
The problem with open standards, as always, is all the other people out there. Federation, if you can keep it.
Avatar
Don't get why there has to be a beef. I think Bluesky is shaping up to have more political discussion, which is my main bag, so I'm doing Bluesky. Wonder where the friction is coming from?
Avatar
Mastodon has a loud subset of users prone to hyperbole and drama, especially when it comes to the inevitability of federation with commercial social media platforms.
Avatar
Yea, there's a real subculture there of rumour milling on "purity" issues & drama. You can only laugh when you see telephone create "new facts" in real time. It's, I'm afraid, one of the real critiques of the whole instance-feudalism thing ... it breeds culture wars with artificial identity politics
Avatar
Purity tests are the worst. I use Microsoft application
Avatar
Agreed re Mastodon's cultural flaws, although Bluesky has plenty too. For me it's about where the political gossip settles (I'm a politics junkie), and I'll deal with the rest. Bluesky's current setup not amplifying idiots feels promising to me. God knows how they're going to monetise it though!
Avatar
If they never try to do video hosting, the monetisation may not be too bad.
