This is also an excellent point. Contra all the conspiracy thinking, anyone can run in most presidential primaries as long as they meet the filing requirements. That no one serious tried should be an indication they didn't think a challenge on whatever policy grounds would work.

Bad debate + bad polls + already heightened anxiety = stampede is probably still the best explanation, though. And there's really not much you can do about that but gut it out. Once panic sets in its nearly impossible to disconfirm without a cooling off period.
My problem with the sudden decline people are the ones who also latched onto the Hurr report, the pre-SOTU biden is weak claims, etc. It seems like it's always Biden getting old suddenly, for years now.
