And I say this as someone who hasn't read them and has only seen season 1 and the movie

Read the books. Trust us. Audiobook is fine. The show is great on its own, but the real strength is in the quality of the adaptation, the way they are weaving in the breadth of the series. It's worth your time. At least up to Blood and Gold.
