I find this a strange argument because although I have no love for The New York Times, they are correct to hear when Trump and the entire far right describe The Times and the media for which it's a synecdoche as their enemy and which they want to destroy
I don’t recall the NYT calling for Trump to step down after being convicted of 34 counts of fraud and being called by a judge at his civil trial a rapist in the common person sense

Also that editorial is premised on the idea that the most important thing is to get rid of Trump, very explicitly?

The New York Times is a part of the liberal establishment and that's why it talks about Biden differently than a talk about Trump

Is it though? Doesn't look that way from here.

We can quibble about "liberal"--I say that word with no particular love either--but my point is just that the Times understands itself to be in an antagonistic/competitive relationship with the far right (which is, in many ways, a kind of media project itself), and that its audience is liberals

I would have agreed with you up to 10 years ago, but not since. Insofar as they still play "centrist" it's the "moving the overton window right every chance they get" variety. Their trans coverage is a bit of a tell.

This is "Clinton email server" quality work, with the same bad-faith intent bsky.app/profile/tran...
New York Times published an article by Azeen Ghorayshi that uncritically platformed alleged leaked emails from a notorious anti-trans advocate without seeing the original material for themselves. #transgender #trans #LGBTQ #LGBTQIA www.lgbtqnation.com/...#transgender #trans #LGBTQ #LGBTQIA www.lgbtqnation.com/...
New York Times publishes story based on edited emails put together by anti-trans activist - LGBTQ Nationwww.lgbtqnation.com The story accused the Biden administration of wanting to remove age limits on gender-affirming surgery. But that's not what happened.

Always the the NYT's was a conservative in a liberal's clothing.

Also, is there any statement from the NYT editorial board, ever, that implies Trump *should* be president?

The editorial is itself premised on Trump as existential threat! "why haven't you called for the existential threat to abolish itself?" is such a strange retort
