Yascha Mounk joins the ranks of political pundits who are making it clear they have no idea how elections actually work. Anyone who can come up with a way for a party to self-organize a democratically legitimate primary in a month should just go ahead and lay it out!
Another asinine 'solution' to the Biden Problem, this time from Yascha Mounk. Again, these people think their *entire job* is political strategy and predicting poll numbers. Yet they somehow think that spending months drawing attention to their own party's weaknesses is a good strategy!

How much of a goon do you have to be to claim the duly elected VP is the one without the “democratic legitimacy” problem in this scenario? The bar for reactionary centrists is so low.

For chrissake, follks are losing their shit. Breathe, people!

The hilarious thing is Harris would be an enormous favorite in the scenario Mounk lays out. A month firehouse caucus, no states would agree to have a full primary this late in the game would just be a name rec game and who has more name rec than the VP? Whitmer, Shapiro et. ct. would have no shot.

I think we’ve moved beyond the point that we can call these people centrists any more.

A one-day consultative vote??? I’m gonna investigate whether APSA can strip him of his doctorate.

The inherent racism in his whole argument is shocking. He says she was a DEI hire. And we can just push her because reasons. He is not very smart, and why anyone pays attention to him is confusing.

People pay attention to him because he makes them feel smug and sensible for holding the biases they share with him.

Only the engaged vote in primaries, which is bias, NOT representation. Especially when it's the disenchanted vote that's needed to win this election. If anything, primary the battleground states. Even better, do a kickass poll. It would likely be a more accurate barometer of what ticket could work.

Sure just set up another primary in a swing state and do a poll so good everyone will accept the results even if their candidate comes in fourth. So easy it’s a wonder no one has thought of it yet!

The president is a figurehead without a sliver of daylight between anyone on the shortlist. Not to mention that the entire administration will carry over with an agenda well underway. Why do people think we must split hairs for a favorite? That's the identity politics that got us into this mess.

Presidents wield immense power and history is littered with globally consequential idiosyncratic differences among primary candidates. “Identity politics” in this instance is having leadership that actually represents the country demographically something we have yet to achieve.

Sure. But is that Biden right now? Even though his term's been great, he hasn't moved the needle on his approval rating in 4 yrs. He's declined interviews, gets rushed off the podium, miffs softball questions in a debate he called, and is -10 to a felonious clown wearing orange makeup and a red cap.

Joe can make a woman the President of the United States. Damn. It will be HIS sacrifice, and he alone can make this happen. All he needs to do is make the speech of his career. Hand the presidency to Harris and cheer her on. Dems will be onboard and 3% more can give them all the battleground states.
