Furiously making appendix figures for #MPSA2024 over here. ...for a study with @ethanvporter.bsky.social and Don Green, we did a warmup exercise in which we asked subjects to guess the partisanship of characters from The Office. could not resisting posting

Love this. Angela is interesting.

yes, the negative correlation with subject partisanship really shows up for her... funny how it's there even for those who don't know the show!

Yeah, wonder if those folks know the characters through clips and memes alone and thus haven't "watched" the show. Or people are really good at picking up visual cues. Good luck with the paper. You roped in one reader at least.

i have no idea what this means (i am not a watcher of the office), but it's fun viz

A downward slope on these graphs indicates that the respondents think the character is more likely to be in the other party, while an upward slope indicates they think they're likely in their own party. A flat slope suggests cross-partisan agreement on the character's partisanship

Sorry, should have clarified that I understood the partisanship part, not the "how the characters from the show may influence perceptions" part. I have no anchors for whether someone would recognize a character as copartisan or not.

could this effect be tracking like/dislike of characters? i.e. if you like the character, you assume they're in your party
