SPEAKING OF I have a very distant memory of my great grandmother having these dry crunchy cookies in her house with large sugar crystals on top but it was not mandel bread and the shape was kind of like an elephant ear but also wasn’t rugelah and I’ve never seen it in a Jewish deli so … ????
And this is ALL Jewish food. Cause we never stayed anywhere for long all our recipes are hand-me-downs. We have dishes that share the same name but you'll never find anyone doing it any way but the one they learned from their mom or grandma and it'll all depend on where they fled from and fled to.

This sounds like palmiers LOL

I don’t think they were though, just looking at the ingredient list - it was more dense than a puff pastry, but I’ll have to try and see.

Specifically sounds like kosher for Passover kichel to me…

They were in a tin in her pantry year round

Ah maybe my family only got them for Passover because they were the closest we could get to a cookie at that time… otherwise would not have chosen to eat them :P

And come to think of it we did used to say kichle also

Wow, this gave me Midwest flashbacks. My grandparents always had a big, round, crunchy pastry with sugar on top that we called "elephant ears." I don't think that's what they are actually called though. Ugh, I can't remember more.
