I don't think Confederate monuments belong anywhere, let alone at Gettysburg
This is what happens when sites/monuments/holidays/names are decontextualized
Living down the road from Gettysburg has taught me to immediately distrust anyone enthusiastic about Gettysburg. The whole battlefield is an attempt at forgetting the why by overwhelming visitors with the how. It attracts people who want permission to forget.
If you celebrate Confederate holidays or are proud of being the descendant of a Confederate soldier, I should get to burn your house down. I'm the descendant of Union officers.
It's not hatred - it's my heritage.
I grew up in Gettysburg and have ALWAYS felt this way… it’s a place that insidiously celebrates division; detailing the tactics without explaining what the battle meant / means; without making us asking ourselves who we want to be
