I think what's hard to convey about the 90s - and makes it hard to tolerate the 2020s if you were born before 1987 or so - is that just about any subculture was an exciting, life-giving refuge and also invisible to mainstream culture which was so boring it's hard to even put into context now

unless you were lucky enough to be in one of the good subcultures (rave, goth, club kid, et al) at the time it was mostly just people talking about Seinfeld and waiting for the century to end
