A few years ago Lee Stuart Evans had a happening 1960s novel out that I liked so much I talked about it with enthusiastic professionalism on @backlisted.bsky.social. Well, he’s got a new one set during the late 1980s that has already attracted the attention of Julian Cope, look. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Line up our new episode on Catherine Storr’s classic Marianne Dreams for your troubled, restless commute, as you occupy a realm between worlds where every glance manifests as physical danger. Enjoy it! Enjoy it before the stone faces get you! 📻 www.backlisted.fm/episodes/au0...

Well, that's this evening's listening lined up for me! @backlisted.bsky.social podcast is such a wunderkammer. #Books
“What is horse girl folk horror?” This question of Andy’s leads into probably the most interesting guest intro ever. Great episode for a book I knew nothing about and is now on its way to me.

What a glorious hour! A thoughtful, interesting conversation about a book and writer I did not know. Thank you.

Better have another quick look at this, before the upcoming *LIVE RECORDING* of a @backlisted.bsky.social Podcast at Foyles this coming Wednesday. Very much looking forward to being in the audience:
What to read after William Golding? Next, for an upcoming Backlisted Pod episode, is Agatha Christie‘s Endless Night. I’m one of those people who ploughed through a great stack of Christie aged about 12, and have since reread only a few: an unusual and very specific reading pattern - interesting.

Like everyone who listened to the latest episode of @backlisted.bsky.social, probably, I immediately looked around for something by Joan Barfoot to read. The only novel of hers available at my local library was Exit Lines, which looks right up my alley.

It is the enthusiasm that makes the difference. I was in the habit of reading mostly formulaic thrillers and “worthy” books promoted by traditional review sources. I then heard one episode of @backlisted.bsky.social and was immediately desperate to read a book I would never have heard of.
This is really pleasing. All of my work over the last twenty years, including the collaboration of Backlisted, has been about finding ways of discussing literary culture that are intelligent, enthusiastic, funny and informed; anything, in other words, than how they do it in the dying books pages.

I am so looking forward to talking to Lauren Elkin tomorrow evening at Waterstones Liverpool about her brilliant new novel Scaffolding. Other topics of discussion: Paris, then and now; the films of Éric Rohmer; and how it feels to be compared to Susan Sontag (it probably feels GREAT).

If you've never listened to @backlisted.bsky.social I suggest you start with episode one and work your way through the archive this summer. Absolutely brilliant!

OMG Gaining Ground is one of the 3(?) most important books in my life. I read it when I was… eleven maybe… and I think about it most weeks to this day. Also much of my actual personality and beliefs can be traced back to it. But I never talk about it to anyone and I don’t know anyone who’s read it
New @backlisted.bsky.social! Gaining Ground by Joan Barfoot, with Rose Ruane @regretteruane.bsky.social John, Nicky and me. This episode is stronger than Mensa, Miller (no relation) and Mailer, spits out Plath and Pinter etc. www.backlisted.fm/episodes/215...

Started Gaining Ground by Joan Barfoot this morning, from the latest @backlisted.bsky.social episode. My partner read it last week and said it’s the best book he’s read for the last couple of years, and can not believe it’s not currently in print. So far, I’d agree one hundred percent.

Found pasted into the absolutely mint copy of "Understanding Anthony Powell" I acquired recently. Judging by the fact that the 20 year old unprotected dust wrapper bears not a single crease, stain nor wrinkle, the students of Arizona did not care much for Powell. @backlisted.bsky.social

I am rocking out to the Manics in Trinity College, Dublin having listened to this one on my walk here. A coincidence that will only become apparent by listening to yet another brilliant episode.

Seriously though, after listening to this episode you'll want to read not just Gaining Ground but also @regretteruane.bsky.social's new novel Birding, plus dig out your old copy of The Holy Bible (Manics album, not confirmation present.) www.backlisted.fm/episodes/215...

Reading this one ahead of the @backlisted.bsky.social podcast event this month at Foyles bookshop on Charing Cross Road… never been to a live podcast recording before so it’s very exciting! And for one of my favourite authors too 💙📚
Just started Endless Night by Agatha Christie on audio and Hugh Fraser is narrating it - I see why he’s so rated, very nice to listen to and a change from some of the recent incredibly old audio I’ve been listening to from the RNIB with crackling and words being tripped over etc 🤣 #BookSky 💙📚
