It is the enthusiasm that makes the difference. I was in the habit of reading mostly formulaic thrillers and “worthy” books promoted by traditional review sources. I then heard one episode of @backlisted.bsky.social and was immediately desperate to read a book I would never have heard of.

This is really pleasing. All of my work over the last twenty years, including the collaboration of Backlisted, has been about finding ways of discussing literary culture that are intelligent, enthusiastic, funny and informed; anything, in other words, than how they do it in the dying books pages.

OMG Gaining Ground is one of the 3(?) most important books in my life. I read it when I was… eleven maybe… and I think about it most weeks to this day. Also much of my actual personality and beliefs can be traced back to it. But I never talk about it to anyone and I don’t know anyone who’s read it

Just started Endless Night by Agatha Christie on audio and Hugh Fraser is narrating it - I see why he’s so rated, very nice to listen to and a change from some of the recent incredibly old audio I’ve been listening to from the RNIB with crackling and words being tripped over etc 🤣 #BookSky 💙📚
