A few years ago Lee Stuart Evans had a happening 1960s novel out that I liked so much I talked about it with enthusiastic professionalism on @backlisted.bsky.social. Well, he’s got a new one set during the late 1980s that has already attracted the attention of Julian Cope, look. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“What is horse girl folk horror?” This question of Andy’s leads into probably the most interesting guest intro ever. Great episode for a book I knew nothing about and is now on its way to me.

Not just good. Super. 🙂 Now we can set about reclaiming/restoring a fine cultural asset.

Good. If you don’t agree, I urge you to unfollow me, then carefully fold yourself up and place yourself in the bin.

I am so looking forward to talking to Lauren Elkin tomorrow evening at Waterstones Liverpool about her brilliant new novel Scaffolding. Other topics of discussion: Paris, then and now; the films of Éric Rohmer; and how it feels to be compared to Susan Sontag (it probably feels GREAT).

If you've never listened to @backlisted.bsky.social I suggest you start with episode one and work your way through the archive this summer. Absolutely brilliant!
‘Mitchinson and Miller share an infectious enthusiasm for their subject and a keen knowledge of literary forms and histories, proving that a “love for books” need not mean a choice between weird parasociality and excruciating dryness.’ @backlisted.bsky.social www.currentaffairs.org/news/new-yor...
The NYT Book Review Is Everything Book Criticism Shouldn't Bewww.currentaffairs.org The Review is famous as an arbiter of taste and quality. But the publication utterly fails to seriously engage with books and the publishing industry.

OMG Gaining Ground is one of the 3(?) most important books in my life. I read it when I was… eleven maybe… and I think about it most weeks to this day. Also much of my actual personality and beliefs can be traced back to it. But I never talk about it to anyone and I don’t know anyone who’s read it
New @backlisted.bsky.social! Gaining Ground by Joan Barfoot, with Rose Ruane @regretteruane.bsky.social John, Nicky and me. This episode is stronger than Mensa, Miller (no relation) and Mailer, spits out Plath and Pinter etc. www.backlisted.fm/episodes/215...

My son is an enthusiast and during those awful teen years when it's cool to be cynical, he was mocked for it at school. I remember giving him a pep talk along the lines of 'it's the loveliest quality, the world will try to squash it out of you, but it will make the good people want to be around you'

Just seen myself referred to as ‘a professional enthusiast’, an epithet that massively overestimates my professionalism.

The goodish news - Reform has only 4 seats, the same as the Greens, so the exit polls were badly wrong. The really bad news - Reform has more than 4 million votes, more than Lib Dem on 3.5 and not far behind Tories on 6.7 million and Labour on 9.6.

I’m hoping Sunak goes full Trump tomorrow: demand a recount, refuse to accept defeat, claim the election was rigged and urge his supporter to storm Parliament.

I'm not saying Kamala Harris would be a great president or even a good one, but it'd be pretty funny to watch conservatives realize they gave a Black woman limitless presidential power without consequences.
