I have to ask: why? Why bother? Dezaki nailed this material the first time around and any adaptation afterwards will be stuck in its shadow, regardless of its actual quality. It's not like MAPPA has the kind of ethos or staff currently that could bring anything new to this story.
It was announced that a "Rose of Versailles" #Anime Film Adaptation is being produced by Studio MAPPA Scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters in 2025 Source: natalie.mu/comic/news/5...

This feels very much like a Sailor Moon Crystal sort of situation. It's a remake made more for the sake of an anniversary and a fresh infusion of merch money instead of bringing something new and/or fresh to the material.

Even Crystal served more of a purpose. Well, on paper, anyway. In execution, 90s was just so much more flavorful that "closer to the manga" really isn't enough to make it especially vital viewing.

100% agreed, I just don't see why this needs to be done or how it would be better in movie form. Shortening up the story so massively is just going to hurt its quality significantly. It's paces was one of the best parts of the original anime run to me.

The fact that this is being done by MAPPA does not inspire confidence. Jesus Christ on a stick!

Isn't the anime different from the manga in some ways, so this might be a more manga-accurate adaptation? Also, Dezaki only directed the second half, so give some credit to Tadao Nagahama, too.

Fair, fair, but Dezaki did the biggest portion and directed the majority of the show's most iconic moments. But GOD, the last thing we need is another manga-faithful adaptation of a classic shojo property. Again, Sailor Moon Crystal showed us how that can fail.

Imagining how cursed a manga faithful Dear Brother would be.

I mean, the manga was only three volumes long, so it'd at least be short... right?

Yeah, probably only a cour of a bad idea.

I could be convinced if they took a BIG swing, but this isn’t it

I honestly prefer the RoV anime to the manga in so many ways (and I typically prefer the manga versions, if they came first). But I feel this is more like LoGH, cus OG Sailor Moon had a ton of filler while RoV and LoGH were close adaptations.
Avatar
like, I feel like someone could say "I'd want to see a sailor moon with zero filler", and yeah, they'd also get like, zero character development, but I can see the need for Crystal. But RoV and LoGH were already perfect. New LoGH isn't bad, but in comparison to OG, it's alright

Once I started reading the novels, I realized just how much Ishiguro and his crew brought to the original LOGH. Those books are very much focused on Reinhart and Yang, but the OVAs expand on the cast and the world so much and make that story so much richer.

My other understanding is that anytime someone drinks a glass of wine or raises and eyebrow, that happened in the novel too

Also maybe it'll throw some money Ikeda-sensei's way.

I sorta feel like MAPPA's activities for the last 5 years or so are a monument to the CEO's hubris and, as is traditional in these cases, he's going to end up getting busted for hyperdimensional tax ultrafraud right in the middle of production for Dorohedoro S2, leaving it in limbo forever.

The cg is dreadful. I fear they will cut too many of the cast to make it about the main four couples. Other than that, it’s good to see her willing to allow her work being adapted again.
