Hello John, it's Tim, I hope this email finds John well. Tim was wondering if John had sent in that report John and Tim had finished yesterday or if Tim should do it.

you used "I", off to the gulag

And that's why Tim is off to the gulags.

Shaggy will join Tim in the gulags. Alex is safe for now.

"It" is a pronoun, too, right?

Wasn't me oh wait, "me" is a pronoun noooooo
Avatar
• You missed “I” • I missed one • *Tim missed one Funny that all three sentences would be identical (“Tim missed Tim’s pronoun”) under the no-pronoun rule. “Dammit” would also probably be “Damn Tim’s blunder”
Avatar
That usage of one is also a pronoun. Oops, so is that of that. Not to mention a. See Tim in mess tent, Comrade!

I read this to my husband and he made this exact face-->😳

Also "it's" at the beginning and "it" at the end. Better to have said "This is Tim" and "do the task".

Shaggy used "you", but not in an email. Is shaggy OK?
Avatar
You're going to be fired for that last word.

Was trying to decide if it is a pronoun or not!!

"Hello John, Tim here. Tim hopes the email here finds John well. Tim was wondering if John had sent in the report John and Tim had finished yesterday or if Tim should do the report."
Avatar
"here" is arguably a pronoun in the second usage.
Avatar
Avatar
It's replacing something like "on your screen" or "which you're reading", right?
Avatar
No, it's an adverb in this case.
Avatar
I think that and this might also be pronouns too technically
Avatar
I think this version gets them all: bsky.app/profile/noth...
"Hello John, Tim here. Tim hopes the email here finds John well. Tim was wondering if John had sent in the report John and Tim had finished yesterday or if Tim should do the report."

from my German background where even articles are gendered the "the" would have go too of course I am open to be corrected on this
Avatar
Articles aren't pronouns whether you have grammatical gender or not; they're a separate part of speech. (The policy, bad as it is, just bans listing your own pronouns in your signature, not using pronouns.)
Avatar
Tim is suspended for 6 months without pay while a Senate subcommittee decides the status of the word 'it'.
Avatar
yeah both it and it's have to be replaced 😛

The word that Knights of Ni cannot hear!!!

“I had ‘5 days to correct the behavior.’ If my tribal affiliation and pronouns were not removed after the 5 days, then administrators would meet and make a decision whether I would be suspended...and/or immediately terminated.” and under Kristi Noem, "terminated" doesn't mean fired
Avatar
And she's a garbage shot, so the termination would be excruciating.

It’s so weird because in Australia the University actually does an indigenous Welcome to Country.
Avatar
In signature blocks, but still, a public university limiting free speech? Not even a gathering/protest, just written words. This is probably the clearest example of a slam-dunk first amendment case I have seen in a while. Of course the puppy killer is behind it.
Avatar
I figured they meant for this to apply to signature blocks, but is it worded that way or could it be interpreted to apply to the entire email?
Avatar
Not sure, that’s just the AP headline. I think the “branding” policy is to not state your preferred pronouns or tribal affiliation in signature or elsewhere, not that you can’t use any pronouns in correspondence. The ACLU is all over this, and only one school in the system bothered to enforce jt.
Avatar
Did the lawmakers even think this through? Did no individuals bring it up to the lawmakers how this is unrealistic? Pronouns are literally part of the English language. It makes the lawmakers and the people of the state look like idiots. (Not using pronouns is hard.)
Avatar
They didn't ban using pronouns in emails. They banned the extremely common courtesy of adding pronouns in one's email signature.
Avatar
Ohhhhh, ok. Well I don’t like it either way. It’s not hurting anyone except closed minded assholes.
Avatar
Oh, it's bigoted and harmful, for sure. And unfortunately it probably will spread.
Avatar
Oh it will definitely spread unfortunately. There’s dozens of things more important their lawmakers should be focused on but this is an easy win that they can point at and say “we did something” and the idiots who approve of this hatred will all cheer. It’s disgusting.
