No, you can just say what the color is. Alt text is used by people with all kinds of disabilities and neurospiciness, as well as blind and low-vision folks. Sticking with what's in the photo or image is best.
Another thing I like to add at the beginning is the type of media: picture/drawing/ect. (although I don’t know for sure if people who use alt text actually back this up or not)
I'm guessing that photo is default unless stated otherwise? Most of my alt text is for my quilting Instagram, so it's largely descriptions of what I've got pinned to my design wall. I do wonder how many people with screen readers are on quilting Instagram and what level of description to use.
I was just wondering only moments ago if it was appropriate to link the know-your-meme page when you've used a popular template. Are links in alt-text okay?
I do not have any visual impairment but as far as I know you should not put links in ALT text because they will not hyperlink so the screen reader will just annoyingly and uselessly read the whole thing out loud.
Links in alt text generally aren't usable, but if you reference the name of the meme, people can look it up on KYM if they want more context! (And tbh, "Spiderman pointing meme" is more efficient & useful than "a picture of two people in Spiderman suits standing in an alley in front of a car, poin--
I usually just describe the meme and say it’s a meme. For example: “the meme of Homer Simpson slowly disappearing into the bushes, hoping not to be noticed. Text says “it’s above 50 degrees. Time to let the forest reclaim me.”
THIS IS A GOOD USE CASE FOR GENERATIVE AI
For both the unsighted and folks who will never write alt text. Generative AI describes the picture. I like to add commentary to the unsighted community (you know who you are), while the robots write picture descriptions.
Unfortunately, even when AI correctly identifies what's in the picture (which is hit or miss, though getting better!), it can't tell which details are important in context - which is a key part of making image descriptions useful! Maybe as a starting point for human edits, at most?
