Software engineer, rodent whisperer, writer. ex-MSFT, Xoogler, currently watching loss curves and other spooky stuff. Some kind of chronically depressed wizard. We could all be Green Lantern, but instead we're fighting to be Lex Luthor. She/her.

anyway, reading about the robot squirrel presenting its butthole I can only say it's a refreshingly forthright example of

while I appreciate that larger, more recent diffusion architectures render text relatively accurately, they never have quite the same charm as the older messy mangled-text generations.

this has lasted way longer than I thought it would. checked boxes went from 300K to over 600K but our flag was still there.

I take heart in the fact that if we could have exterminated mice, we would have done it thousands of years ago. the mice prosper yet. little heroes: they know the way. and the 'exterminators' don't know what they're doing, yet. may Claude Shannon and Mr. McKay, wherever they are, bless us all.

pink eye / gothic valentine / pixel art / fellow traveler the reason I never worry about people softlocking over "AI boyfriends/girlfriends" is because there is a button on my workstation that makes infinite sweet mice optimized to my preferences and most days I don't even press it. #aiart

Having some fun testing out this very small VLM on a wide variety of images, to establish how usable it is for captioning/alt-text, classification, OCR, and other tasks. let's start with a few reasonably typical, sane examples of captioning (in the ALT text):

Now for the fun failure cases, here are some _completely insane_ captions:

generative AI does remind me of the 70s, but not because of ELIZA or PERRY, but the beginning of the microcomputer revolution. little guy vs. mainframes, anxieties about AI, privacy and job loss, power to the people. read any issue of "Creative Computing" from 1975-1976 if you doubt.
A lot of what is happening with ChatGPT reminds me of the time in the 70s when PARRY, a chatbot designed to simulate schizophrenia was set to talk to Eliza, a simpler chatbot designed to simulate a therapist.

computer vision -- the technology you are objecting to here -- literally gives sight to the blind. it's a miracle of mathematics, and you are Don Quixote tilting against windmills, thinking they're society-eating giants. Ben Franklin would be extremely disappointed right now, sirrah:

I would ask the same for mice, but we got this so IDK: (...actually I should just make the one true mouse game, assuming I survive the next few years. all hail the Trash Gang.)
More video games where you play as a cat doing cat stuff please, why is this not already an industry trend

I hope you enjoy examining this 1776 map of New York and New Jersey as much as I did. So much to see: inset map of tiny NYC! the Endless Mountains! the Manor of Rensselaerswyck (last surviving Dutch patroonship)! the Great Swamp! the "Sandy Barren Desarts" of New Jersey!

what, you say? schlockfests from the early 80s that would never, under any circumstances, be remade today? I see your TBLWHIT (1982), and I raise you "Under the Rainbow" (1981). it's even rated PG, so suitable to enjoy with your whole family! (do not do this)
You couldn’t make this movie nowadays and that’s for the best

uh, computer, I really dig the old-skool postcard look, it's marvelous, but I don't think Sasquatch setting his junk on fire is the appropriate thing, even on Mt. St. Helens Day. #sdxl

the video rental stores that still exist are few, and mostly in big cities, but they're way, way better than Blockbuster ever was. Scarecrow Video in Seattle, e.g.:

if you want to push into the mania, as a rule, supermassive black holes rotate, and often at relativistic speed. they have magnetic fields that are kinda strong: they influence star formation for a looong way around, helping to sculpt central galactic bulges. "aurora" of a different kind:

it is gratifying to read this; these may be "new observations" in the sense you only have an artifact to observe these properties in now, but I'm fairly sure the team at Meta knew all this as a theoretical fact a year ago (it's not a secret that super-Chinchilla models are strong!)

I know Bluesky is allergic to technology, but it was super funny how every time I made a post like this on Twitter (before I went protected) I'd get follows that were "Totally Not A Spook, Honest":
