Today in 1945 at the University of Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory—one day after the Trinity test—Chief Physicist Leo Szilard signed and circulated a petition to President Truman urging him to weigh all the “moral responsibilities” before deciding whether to use atomic bombs in an attack on Japan.

Click the link to read about what happened this week at MSNBC when "Morning Joe" was removed from the schedule for a day. view.newsletters.cnn.com/messages/172... Then ask yourself if this is not a dead simple example of what Timothy Snyder meant when he wrote: "Do not obey in advance."

what a cool and redeemable newspaper that should be taken seriously it is very important to get paid to write progressive articles for the management that makes these edits boycotting would be wrong because i would have to think about the authenticity of my ethics and that is hard i'm an ally btw

Journalists who can't figure out the entire discourse is rigged and thus aren't even very good journalists either: bsky.app/profile/andr...
An account with the handle @listlistlist.bsky.social was created on June 26, with a mod list named "bouie discourse" created the same day. At some point after that but before the drama erupted the list was renamed "journalism discourse". On July 13, about 140 accounts were added to the list and...

The problem with "where have you been" responses to people's rising political concerns is that we should be encouraging people to become politically active rather than scolding them upon their arrival.

"we need a more pro-social social media!" I say, as I draw curlicues under the title of my 'these are the friends of my enemies!!!' list. "successful moderation means moderating behavior, not speech!" I shout, as I purge the followers of the followers of my enemies, down to the seventh generation.

bring back the All-Star break Old Timers' Game! here's Luke Appling hitting a homer off Warren Spahn in 1982. I guess a rough equivalent today would be Reggie Jackson or Johnny Bench homering off, say, Bert Blyleven or Dwight Gooden:

if we get it going now, in 15-20 years or so the Old Timers' Game can be all broken-down steroid era guys! (better living thru chemistry?!) thrilled at the future possibility of a 75 year old Curt Schilling pulling a hammy trying to pitch to a suspiciously wan Juan Gonzalez.

Might be the cautious marketing person in me, but selling a t-shirt/record combo based on a song called "Thank You Lord, for Harry" feels like a risky double down. Maybe make sure the song's a hit first, THEN sell the t-shirt?

I wanna mute "Vance" but this is going to wreck my ongoing documentation of Lucille Ball's series, of which Vivian Vance is a significant person

I look at JD Vance and just think "you could sell a lot of used marching band equipment to that guy"

I like it very much when a video game takes an early game boss and makes it a standard-issue grunt enemy later in the game It really makes you feel like you’ve grown stronger, whether through your character leveling up or through your own actual skill improving

NOTING that many of the holodeck episodes start with malfunctions CONSIDERING that many of these endanger the bridge crew and/or the whole ship CONSIDERING they are, then a menace to starfleet staff and guests WE SHALL HEREBY mark them "use at your own risk" areas and rename them as "Yolodecks"
