Last night I went to the Little Theatre at Epidaurus for the two monologues in the Contemporary Ancients cycle (living writers’ takes on ancient plays) and was horrified to see the treatment of one of the playwrights, a wheelchair-user. #AthensEpidaurusFestival #ContemporaryAncients

Comics of the mid-14th century! Here's a straightened-out, lighter version if you wanna check out more details... ( h/t @lizzzs.bsky.social ) I hope most now find it obvious that this is the same art form as the latest X-Men—not an easy sell when I wrote Understanding Comics in 1993.
Early European sequential art. "Thirty Bible Stories," mid-14th century, anonymous Veronese artist (Museo del Castelvecchio, Verona)

The entire creative team took a prolonged curtain call, EXCLUDING the writer. Not only was the stage inaccessible to him, not a bow in his direction, not a spotlight on him, not so much as a calling of his name and a clap. WTH?!? #EpidaurusFestival #AthensEpidaurusFestival #disability #access

all the culture you liked from decades past was made possible by cheap rent and artists' pay keeping up with what things cost
It's because we all have day jobs, advances are pennies, publishers don't market, one underperforming book tanks your career, and we're expected to be well-tuned brand machines on social media websites designed to suck our souls dry.

So: in the 21st Century, a playwright with physical disabilities was sidelined from the premiere *of his own play* by a well-funded international festival because they *hadn’t considered his access needs*. Disgraceful! #Epidaurus #theatre #access #disability #Greece

It’s getting to the point where the publishing industry should probably be looking at alternatives to its frankly pathological dependency on Microsoft Word.

Before you finish for the day, write a couple of garbled sentences about what you were hoping to write next. (This is ma’s advice and she is not wrong)
if u see this, quote-post with your tips for writers that no one gives anymore because they seem obvious (even though they're not)

And what did you do while industrial civilisation was collapsing, grandad? I made performatively righteous social media posts about children’s books, and whether people should take their shoes off indoors.

Please stop telling me to look at things if I “want to be really mad”. I spend all my days trying to stay human and reasonable in the storms of incandescent fury and bone-deep grief just being aware in these hours brings. Thank you.

We talked about this a lot last year when Bsky was just getting going but I think an important thing to remember if you want to keep things tolerable here is that unfollowing/muting/blocking is part of routine feed maintenance and if there's stuff that bums you out every day, you should remove it

What if I told you that 24 years ago Democrats nominated a guy who literally won a Nobel Prize for his work fighting climate change but he lost the White House by <600 votes b/c folks on the left decided he “wasn’t good enough” & “couldn’t get excited about him”?
The environment is a crisis. What Biden has done is not nothing, but it's not good. When islands are sinking, people are dying, wildfires and hurricanes are out of control..."we've slowed down how fast it's getting worse" is not a great message. And Dems' message failures don't help either:

It's not harmless. It's not "just an innocent thing" to be fooled by AI. You NEED to be able to discern and differentiate reality. You NEED to know how the world works on a basic level. Because fooling you with baby animals and flowers is just the start of something much worse.

While a lot of the recently thriving UK industries they've destroyed look like it's been down to their incompetence, the destruction of Higher Education and Arts & Ents feel ideological.
The Tories will be leaving office having comprehensively broken one of the best and most internationally competitive sectors the UK had when they took power 14 years ago
