There's some neat science going on here, and I got to speak with Aussie astronomer Dr Holger Baumgardt from Uni. of QLD, who played a direct role in providing the theoretical modelling and investigations into the stellar velocities around the monster, 20,000 solar mass black hole. 🔭
Astronomers suggest that Omega Centauri, a massive globular cluster orbiting our Galaxy, likely has a 20,000 solar mass black hole in its core. @cosmicrami.bsky.social spoke with Uni. of QLD's Dr Baumgardt, a co-author on the paper. www.spaceaustralia.com/news/omega-c... 📷 ESO 🔭🧪 #SpaceAustralia

oh wow! ESA is planning to launch the Rapid Apophis Mission for Space Safety (Ramses - fantastic acronym!) mission to rendezvous with the asteroid Apophis when it passes Earth in 2029. Apophis (375m size) passes extremely close to Earth in 2029 and 2030s (no risk of impact for next 100 years) 🔭

This morning at 8am on 16 July, my partner and I had breakfast together. Now - some 13.5 hours later, it is 1:30am for him on the 16 July. In 2.5 hours, he and I will no longer be living in 16 July together. Where is my partner?

Astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell was born #OTD in 1943. As a Cambridge grad student in 1967, she discovered an entirely new type of celestial object: Pulsars! In 1974 the Nobel was given to her advisor; she was left off. 🧪 👩‍🔬 🔭 Photo: National Science & Media Museum

PSR J0437-4715 is the closest millisecond pulsar to Earth. It’s so bright that it shows us problems with our instruments 😂 We can take such precise measurements that we can tell it is 511.93 +/- 0.35 light years away. It’s one of the most accurate distances measured outside our system. 🤯
Australian astronomers, using Murriyang (Parkes radio telescope) data & working with NICER researchers have made the most precise measurements of the nearest millisecond pulsar to Earth. @cosmicrami.bsky.social outlines results: www.spaceaustralia.com/feature/clos... 📷 C. Knox/OzGrav/Swinburne 🔭🧪

Any arguments put forward that Jocelyn Bell Burnell held historical views that she ‘shouldn’t’ have been included in a share of the Nobel Prize are outdated and lack consideration of sacrifices and compromises that women researchers had to make for their careers in an overly male dominated field.

Happy birthday to #astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell! In 1967, she was a grad student when she discovered the 1st radio pulsar, a highly magnetized, rotating neutron star that emits a beam of EM radiation. This radiation can only be observed when the star is pointed towards us; 🧵1/n 🧪🐡👩🏻‍🔬 #histsci

Read this earlier today and find these results interesting. Using GAIA data to infer dark compact remnant binaries, like neutron stars with a visible GAIA companion. Inferring the orbit and masses of these from this data. I'm a bit confused about their sample selection ONLY incl. wide binaries ...

something continues to not sit with me right, since the Trump incident. The way he pumped his fist several times as they were ushering him off. Not entertaining any conspiracy theories or anything, but that was one of the clearest signs of how Trump can seize the marketing moment, then and there.

Some very cool new science! Folks from our team used data collected by Murriyang to place constraints on the closest millisecond pulsar to Earth. These were then used as priors for NICER researchers to further constrain mass, radius and equations of state of matter on a neutron star! 🔭🧪

Are people *genuinely* surprised that Musk donated to Trump's campaign? Does it really need big house publications dedicating 800-word think-pieces on it like *all signs* have not been there for us to see? Musk's views are aligned with Trump and have been for some time. That's not news.
