7 hours in the ER and a small miracle. They found Dad a room. Still no MRI but it was virtually non-stop doctors, nurses, pharmacist and nutritionist. We’re all rather exhausted.

On subway to hospital to help Dad advocate for himself & make sure he has what he needs. Got my Mom to babysit last minute & she asked for help paying parking tickets & she promptly lost her credit, because of course she did. I found it after several minutes in the empty parking ticket envelope.

Happy birthday to American #astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt (1868-1921) who set the scale of our Universe. 🐡🧪🔭👩🏻‍🔬#histsci In her day, women scientists were regularly hired to do menial chores. She was hired to count images on photographic plates as a "computer". In studying these plates, in 1908 🧵1/

The geriatric doctor sent Dad to ER with my brother to get an MRI. They’re telling him it might take 2 days! On the one hand if they admit him and deal with making sure he is eating and taking meds that’s a relief but on the other I am scared he’ll be neglected for 2 days.

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

Here’s the final print of an adorable, caterpillar-like blue velvet worm from New Zealand or Aotearoa for #InsertAnInvert2024! 🧪🐡 Velvet worms (phylum: Onychophora) are named for their velvet-like texture and somewhat wormlike appearance. They are elongate, soft-bodied, many-legged nocturnal 🧵1/n

The WUNDERPUS A close relative of the mimic octopus, but with a much cooler name. Some liberties taken, esp with the color. Large stickers and small prints available. jencmars.bigcartel.com #SciArt #bsnm

Plans for day camp for the 10yo fell through this 4-day week, so I said he could stay home. So far the drain has backed up. He tried to climb the bookshelf at the library. I tried to get him a new passport photo and he wouldn’t stop making faces. If anyone has patience to spare I could use it.

So much of the last two months we’ve just alternated between trying to manage my father’s ongoing health crisis and trying to solve our recurring plumbing crisis. Plumbers expected for the fourth time today. ☹️

Happy birthday to #physicist Harriet Brooks (1876 - 1933) who discovered atomic recoil, Radon & recognized radioactive elements could undergo chains of transmutations into a series of new elements.👩🏼‍🔬🎢🐡🧪#histsci She was Rutherford’s 1st grad student at McGill. After publishing her results 🧵1/n

Happy Canada Day! This is a digital collage of my linocut of each province and territory with their official flora and fauna, and my home province Ontario with trillium and common loon. I hope you enjoy your long weekend and get out into nature. #linocut #printmaking #Canada #Ontario #wildlifeArt

It’s only 18°C but the pool is open so the 10yo insisted on swimming and we are now very cold and joking about hot chocolate in June.

I couldn’t resist the pretty blues of the New Zealand/Aoetearoa velvet worms, so I selected a different species than suggested for #InsertAnInvert2024. Here are my 8” x 8” linocuts drying…. #linocut #printmaking #wip #wildlifeArt #sciArt #invertebrate #velvetWorm

Another fairly terrifying afternoon of dragging my father to a doctor he doesn’t want to see, who bent over backwards to make room in her schedule because she was so concerned about him.

I managed to go see ‘Making her mark’ at AGO about women artists in Europe 1400-1800. Not only were there fabulous printmakers but a real focus on #sciart. I was so happy to see several works by Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), entomologist & scientific illustrator #histsci #womenInSTEM 🧵1/n

My child has been frantically making a stop-motion animation to show his class. The last day of school is tomorrow and now we have to figure out how to get a file that big off his iPad and somewhere his teacher can access.

My mother has just called me to ask if she can come over. She wants IT help. Both her phone and iPad browsers are refusing to open more tabs. SHE HIT THE LIMIT! 🤣 I had to apologize for laughing.

Making some new antipodean invertebrates for July, the subterranean month for #InsertAnInvert2024 🧪🐡 You may not know the velvet worms if you live outside the tropics & in the N hemisphere. There are 2 families of them: 1 in the tropics & the other, like my Lino block depicts, from the southern 🧵

What I like the most about this painting, ‘Interior what young woman tracing a flower’ by Louise Adéone Drölling (evidently of @artologica.net in a past life circa 1820) is that neither artist nor curator felt the squirrel is remarkable enough to mention. (At AGO Making her mark exhibit)

It’s always so weird to think about holiday stuff in the heat of the summer but I thought I would make a “12 days of Christmas” pattern for the Spoonflower Winter Holiday Patchwork Challenge. Part of me thought of making a slightly sinister Yuletide pattern … 🧵1/2

Hi folks - I'm developing my first planetary science class this summer and looking for any examples/advice on active learning applied to planetary science topics. I've got resources for physics and geology and they're helpful, but anything more specific would be neat.

Time for a new edition of ‘Noh Spacetime’! 🧪🐡 Years ago I stumbled upon a book about Noh in a used bookstore. I collect masks and am interested in Japanese culture, so I bought, ‘Noh, The Classical Theatre’ by Yasuo Nakamura. I was very surprised to read how the author described the difference 🧵1/n
