Amazing! Congrats on making this happen at last, Deb!

Thank you for all your help with this! Your input helped a lot!

I was glad to help! It's such a cool and worthwhile project. Thanks for spearheading it and putting in all the work!

I look forward to seeing all of this come to fruition, and hopefully one day attend! This year alas probably not, but I am excited to follow the results. Congrats Deb and the entire team!

Super excited to see this happening!!

Is the Mangaka Hall of Fame really limited only to those who had an impact "in North America"? If so, that feels immensely limiting & disappointing, as there are tons of HoF-worthy mangaka with no American presence, or historically haven't sold well here. That is my only nitpick, though.

There are other awards for those places. The Angoulême International Comics Festival in France, for example. This should be to specifically celebrate manga in English.
Avatar
All I'll say is that I disagree, and leave it at that.
Avatar
personally i think there should also be award shows for manga in places like the UK, Australia/New Zealand and Southeast Asia, since those markets are usually different than North America (especially Southeast Asia), but that's not stopping me from celebrating this
Avatar
I agree, and I encourage them to start their own awards.

There's also a Mangaka Hall of Fame for manga artists. The one they mentioned was the Manga Publishing Hall of Fame, that's the one related to North America.

And right below that list: "Mangaka Hall of Fame and the Manga Publishing Hall of Fame celebrate lifetime achievement by individuals who have made significant contributions to manga’s introduction, growth, and creative influence in North America." Only mangaka who "made it" in English count.
Avatar
That's cool. Although I personally feel that is the least important part of something like this. Inducting Tezuka into a Manga Hall of Fame just feels like giving Shakespeare a Tony Award--entirely superfluous. Inducting Fred Schodt however.... that's exciting!
Avatar
There dozens of awards for those already in Japan, France and the Eisners here. It's good to have one just for NA. Much-needed in fact, as the Eisners barely have space for manga
Avatar
I don't wholly agree with that, but I can tell that I'm an outlier in this regard, so I'll drop it.
Avatar
It says "in America." So people who've made a big impact in Mexico wouldn't be eligible.
Avatar
And in English, ok? Sorry Mexico.

I think there's an interesting conversation to be had about what "in America" means when you have multiple Canadian publishers releasing manga into both the American and Canadian markets.
Avatar
Like, there is a separate Canadian book market (even if it overlaps a lot with the USA) & there are plenty of books that are only released in Canada, but there isn't a separate Canadian manga market (in which manga are only released in Canada and not the USA).
Avatar
Plus, all the manga released by French publishers that's available in Quebec (and, to a lesser extent, the rest of Canada).
Avatar
Very glad to see that get off the ground!

Happy to see this, congratulations Deb. I also hope one day Fred Patten gets into the HOF.

There’s certainly no shortage of great peeps on the shortlist for Manga Publishing Hall of Fame honorees — lots of great people, both famous and unsung helped manga in English get to where it is today. I look forward to recognizing these people as the American Manga Awards continues!
Avatar
Are there any formal standards for works to qualify? I assume there's gotta be something Japanese about them, since otherwise it would just be a comics award?
Avatar
You could say that, yes. We opted to NOT require that titles be originally published in Japan, since there are now several exceptions to that (like Kodansha’s reader portal titles, which are US-first). However, the translation & lettering submissions must include both EN & JP sample pages
Avatar
Interesting, thank you.
Avatar
The other requirements is that the submitted works have at least 1 volume published in english (print or digital) between August 1, 2023 to July 31, 2024. No self-published, limited edition/crowdfunded-only works.
Avatar
For new edition of classic manga, at least 1 volume of the series must have been originally published in Japan before 2004. (20 years)
