Eventually I went from 2400 all the way to 9600 - and that was also an external model. Didn't get an internal PC mount type until I got to 14400 and learned USR WinModems (which sucked)
2400? Pfft, you kids had it so easy. I had to dial in to the local BBS at 300 baud, only to have the owner's buddy cheat at TradeWars and blow up all my fighters. 🧐

It was a TRS-80 for me, back in 1980. Then an IBM PCjr, if you can believe it. When I eventually got two floppy drives in the same computer, I thought I'd died and ascended to some better, geekier realm of existence. 😅

I *did* take the time to learn DOS 3.3 on a Compaq luggable 386! I was working overnights at a paper mill & that was my down time!
Man, I remember sitting breathlessly at a friend's house and watching as another friend in a different city sent us a message one... letter... at... a... time over his 300 baud modem. (When I finally got one myself to log on to GEnie it was a blazing fast 2400 baud.)
I used to have to string a wire from from the family computer over a ceiling fan to the phone port across the room, so nobody tripped over it and disconnected me 😂
Trade Wars was great as was (had to look it up) Operation Overkill.
