I would gladly never move again, but most definitely not an international move, and especially not with a baby. so I guess what I'm really saying is: I must not post anything that will get me deported from Switzerland
like I'm not even 25% done with what needs to be done for the move but even just making the plane journey with the amount of stuff you need to pack when moving someplace permanently with a baby is…an experience
my biggest problems with Dante multiplexing aren't the number of inputs or even fans (newer units are silent and can be POE powered), but rather that a) it's very hard to find units with preamps, and the ones that do exist are not user friendly b) every Dante peripheral is *insanely* expensive
it also has to do with the fact that I want it to work with the equipment we already have on hand (which is a Yamaha Touchflow 1 console) and getting non-Yamaha Dante equipment to work with their UI is way too complicated for use unless there's always an engineer (i.e. me) present

Dante is a cool one: it's basically analog to digital / digital to analog over either switched IP or a direct 1gbps Ethernet link, but because it's an established/licensed protocol, any Dante certified device will work* with any other Dante certified device
*this does not mean it's simple lmao
USB-C x2, USB-A x2, HDMI, Cat6a, and then DB25 x4. Most of the time the USB ports aren't in use, but having them there means we can connect USB3 + peripherals etc from the live room and have them work. I'm eventually going to get a 4K HDMI over IP relay that runs USB as well, but it's limited to 2.0
the network port is so you can run a direct line to any Dante interfaces inside the live room—they absolutely work switched, and I have a LAN drop in the live room, but I've found that sometimes you benefit from having the direct path during configuration
Every connection works and it only took uhhhhh weeks of troubleshooting interrupted by months of medical emergencies. but we now have the ability to run 32 channels of analog audio in/out of the live room
I'm not even trying to be a ponytail grandpa analog sound guy about this—it's just that the digital input/output module that works with our current setup has a loud as fuck fan that you can't turn off, and can't be used to output unbalanced audio unless every single cable involved has a pin floated
You can imagine my relief when it finally worked and the headphone outputs didn't sound like someone had hidden an air conditioner in the wiring somehow
technically speaking any Dante module would work with our main console, but it's pricey and configuring it to play nice with the Yamaha interface that the rest of the cast has familiarity with is...taking a risk. I do actually know how to configure the hell matrix, but come on lol
a lot of my recent work has been physical (installing acoustic treatments / studio equipment, building furniture and shelving, soldering and wiring cables) and it makes me look forward to the work week in a way that staring at a computer doesn't. But man, it beats the *hell* out of your body
