I appreciate Dave Matthews protesting Netanyahu but he of all people should know he had the opportunity to do the funniest thing of all time

Started reading Tapping the Source, the (very, very) freely adapted source novel for Point Break. It’s pretty great & finding out it inspired a whole mini-movement of “surf noir” made my day. Is there skateboarding noir too? There absolutely should be.

(David Marshall Grant, Joe on Broadway:) "I stopped acting after Angels in America. I didn't think there was anywhere else to go...being an actor was so filled with the shame of being gay & my whole journey, refusing to be who I was, that had all gotten mixed up with acting. I wanted to be myself."
(Stephen Spinella, Prior Walter on Broadway:) "People would come backstage, asking me 'Are you dying of AIDS?' The NYT asked me if I was HIV-positive!" (Photographer Bruce Weber:) "When he took his clothes off onstage, the audience audibly murmured, 'He's so skinny! The lesions, are they real?' "

I thought Parents would be a wacky offbeat horror-comedy, sort of Eating Raoul in 1950s suburbia, & was…not prepared for what I saw. The most terrifying Randy Quaid has ever been & some of the most deliberately disgusting food styling ever committed to celluloid.
I'd rather hear about what horror movie you find underrated. Your hidden gem. Your problematic fave. Your most beloved piece of trash.

Having just used courthouse public restroom facilities along with someone else I can now weigh in on the most important ideological issue of our age: I don’t give a shit what your gender identity or genital configuration is but Jesus Christ, WASH your HANDS.

(Dramaturg Kimberly Flynn:) "When we were in Broadway previews, once we hit scene 4 & it was clear Louis & Prior were a gay couple, there'd emerge into the aisles people we liked to believe were tourists, escaping the abomination. We always felt kind of bad for them, everything they were missing."

As mentioned in replies here my answer to everything now is “go read a book.” Just started this one:

Both films also about the temptations of lust. Scorsese missed a trick not having a scene where Mary Magdalene walks past and Jesus' glasses crack and milk spurts out of the milk bottles he's holding, frankly.
"Both of these films are about the American obsession with celebrity, one deals with it directly through show business while the other uses the trappings of an old Hollywood religious epic to show how Jesus' followers will shape and ensure his fame after his d:I am thankfully run over by a truck:

It’s this existentialism-free one, because I have Hobbes’ unerringly terrible fashion sense & the final panel still makes me laugh.

All else aside, I was a typically hapless suburban white kid at the apex of the Reagan era & I knew about Black fraternities/sororities just from watching A Different World. It’s a conscious choice not to learn about the culture you live in, because you don’t want that to be the culture you live in.
It's delightful to me about how the earlier predictions this week that a bunch of people -- specifically right-wing white dudes -- who clearly know nothing, even the slightest, about the AKAs and the Divine 9 are going to be in a world of hurt over these next months are already coming true.

We thought getting rid of "pre-existing conditions" would make insurance companies behave themselves, but they just switched to "pre-authorization" as the new way to keep from paying anything. We played nice with for-profit companies. The ACA was the compromise. Single payer now. Medicare for all.
real classic American detail in this story: dude fainted while driving 70 on the interstate because he's a diabetic whose sugar crashed suddenly, he didn't see it coming because his monitor broke, and he couldn't replace it immediately because of an "insurance issue"

Another bug sheet. These came out maybe a little better than the last ones.

“And suddenly a new alliance is becoming evident: an integration of technology & the 80s counterculture. An unholy alliance of the technical world & the world of organized dissent”—yeah, fella, you ain’t kidding & it all worked out GREAT for everyone, I’m gonna buy a locker just to shove you in it.
Started reading Mirrorshades: The Cyberpunk Anthology & while the stories themselves look to fill some big gaps in my (paltry) SF reading the preface is a fucking trip. Tech is now “so deeply radical, so disturbing, upsetting, & revolutionary, it can no longer be contained”—lol stfu nerd.

I’m not reproducing a fucking Russell Brand screenshot but his alt-right opining about US political candidates makes me feel like Jim Broadbent in Hot Fuzz: “YOU’RE NOT EVEN FROM AROUND HERE!” (Everyone else not from around here with opinions who isn’t a chud New Age rapist, proceed as before.)

Watching The Man Who Wasn't There. The Coen brothers did accomplish something pretty big, I suppose, in managing to make a movie studded with more classic noir references than--as the characters might say--Carter has liver pills but which I don't like at all.

goodbye to Abdul 'Duke' Fakir, the last Four Top (3rd from left, looking dapper). From his memoir: "I'm the one who's still alive. My brothers are gone...the journey hasn't been smooth. The highs are what shine through. The only pitfall I see is the 3 of them aren't here with me." rest easy, Duke.
