Being trans means living with a history that’s been actively hidden from us. We didn’t just appear at Institut für Sexualwissenschaft in 1919 or Compton’s Cafeteria in 1966. Yet even as we try to find any future, we have to push against the full flow of cis, homophobic history to see ourselves.

How many elders did we lose in the AIDS epidemic that so many saw as our just punishment? How many people died under names that weren’t theirs or anonymously for a litany of reasons? How do we find threads of community when society has so persistently demanded we be pathologized and isolated?

We need to know our history. But it’s like sifting through ashes while constantly looking over our shoulder. If we seem unaware of history and how to face this chapter in our discrimination, consider how many of us were cut loose from family and community. What we have to remake over and over.
