So I ask that maybe you use your brain and realize that I bring my whole self to my romance novels, and so do other authors, and so belittling the genre by saying that romance books are “just romance” and “even twilight is not just romance” is just wildly ignorant.

Fuck you racist islamphobic person who goes around harassing people

The extreme irony of a publication that tried to censor the word "genocide" putting out an issue of translated poetry about Gaza. I'm glad I got half of my settlement back and donated the money to a Palestinian publisher after they tried to cut me out of my project.

On this past weekend I made my first visit to a book club as a writer/translator. People had such lovely things to say about the anthology being an accessible intro to Chinese poetry and about my translator's essays. They had wonderful questions about my translation process too.

There are so many types of tools available to a translator other than localizing a magical being into a totally different creature that is a complete mismatch. Transliterate, explain, offer descriptions, use a footnote/glossary, just leave it to readers to research... Use your imagination gosh

please, no more fairies, goblins, demons, et cetera when translating fantasy chinese beings... 🙃

but i think in SFF spaces especially this really needs to be talked about a lot more, and i'm waiting to see some statements come out as well

i found it deeply disturbing and upsetting so i haven't talked about it but have definitely seen some discussions on the bird site. a lot of BIPOC i know though are really overtaxed right now trying to fundraise and protest a genocide so i think people are focusing their energies there.

Fucking god please factcheck with me about what you're going write about me and the British Museum before you post it publicly i'm not working with Modern Poetry in Translation anymore and i'm not ready to talk about it, but i don't want anyone to mention me in the same sentence with them ever again

saw a comment about a translation of a chinese poem being really timely commentary about the present... except the opening line of the translation actually obscures the specific context of it being written after a country collapsing after invasion

making an unplanned venture into lyrics translation officially for the first time because Qiu Jin wrote a feminist anthem and i'm working on translating it - lyrics as printed on the bag below

THIS IS ALSO ONE OF MY FAVORITE READS OF THE YEAR SO FAR.
it's the end of June and i guess i should shout about the fact The Lantern and the Night Moths is a pretty queer book, especially because Qiu Jin is featured and the section on Fei Ming also talks about translating nothingness/ambiguity which is of interest to ace and aro folks
