I didn't mean to dismiss the character's accolades at all! I'm just complaining that 80s & 90s TV wasn't "better at writing women" is all. Crusher is awesome, and Gates McFadden is totally cool and I hope I never hear anything bad about her.

My wife, who is also going to be co-author on this, said "does it /have/ to be ST fanfic? I guess it's a familiar universe, with well-known events and such" There's definitely that - it's nice having an ersatz universe, but also it lets me play with military-adjacent imagery from a "safe distance"

At some point I realized that I was basically looking for a pretense to draw hot lesbians in mechanic jumpsuits.

Having fun working on writing, fleshing out character bios, trying to ignore the mounting dread that i'm gonna have to PRACTICE DRAWING all these weirdos. Also I should learn to use blender because perspective is not my forte, and exterior shots will be easier with a starship model i can move around

i do like the sentiment of "who cares how old you are - wear what you want, buy the plushie, watch the cartoon, don't worry about being a weirdo, try a new look, etc" as opposed to "you can be as mean and nasty and creepy and xenophobic as you want and no one will dare stop you"

I've since written 928 words of setting / notes for the first chapter or two. The USS Detroit, after almost 150 years of service is getting decommissioned, and the Captain decides to fake the destruction of the ship, go rogue, and rename it "Nain Rouge"

and then they plan to continue cruising around the edges of federation space, fixing shit and helping out colonies that have fallen through the cracks. No Gods, No Kings, No Admirals.
