Please stop referring to Telegram as an "encrypted app" that is somehow equivalent to Signal. All Signal messages are end-to-end encrypted by default. The only end-to-end encrypted messages on Telegram are one-to-one messages where you have specifically turned end-to-end encryption on.

Not the first time this person has posted this infographic. Also not the first time this was mentioned. ACLU-ass move.

ACLU Indiana should absolutely know better.
Avatar
The person posting it is an ACLU national staffer with no obligation to use the Indiana chapter's busted infographics! Clown shoes shit.

Yeah, I was gonna say. Gillian posted this like a month ago and a bunch of us gave the same feedback about Telegram. Weird that she ignored that and just posted it again
Avatar
i mean what can you expect from an organization that aided and abetted Unite the Right i guess
Avatar
She was also explicitly asking for feedback the last time she posted it bsky.app/profile/gbbr...
Anything we should add to this nerds

i know i was in there lmao. bsky.app/profile/pghg...
Do not put Telegram on this list. Use message auto delete on signal, do not write down sensitive stuff even there. Really though do not fucking use Telegram you really ought to know better.

at least they stopped saying 'encrypted apps like Whatsapp'...

All WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted by default using the Signal protocol. If you want to have an argument about metadata, fine, but the contents of your conversation are more private on WhatsApp than anything on Telegram.
I hate navel gazing about crypto details as if it was 2010 and messages traveled in plaintext, as opposed to the real use cases for actual people in danger. Putting aside that a Signal installation would be a red flag if you lived in Crimea.. TG being server based allows for one- way chat deletion.

The fact that archive team has a project that is silently archiving all known public telegram chats should be all one needs to know about telegram security.
Avatar
Because.. why? That's for public facing channels, being indexable is even pretty much their point.
Avatar
People join telegram and assume it's end to end encrypted and conflate that with "private" when chatting in an indexed public channel. We can argue the nuance of that, but casual end users do not.
AFAICT casual end users just join to talk with their buddies. Then, putting aside that public channels aren't public groups (your link only repeatedly mentions the former), it's pretty much evident that they couldn't be the slightest private when *yourself* you can scroll them without even joining.
Avatar
Even still for signal the system is open source and how it’s encrypted for verification of no backdoors. Telegram does no such thing and keeps their method private
Avatar
Their algorithms are public, but cryptographers thinks they suck for about a dozen reasons (weird design, has some malleability issues, previous versions were directly exploitable in multiple ways, is also poorly defined so almost all 3rd party clients are vulnerable)
Avatar
Ah thanks for the clarification, I had thought (or maybe misremember) what it was.
Avatar
Oh thanks, last time I checked they were closed source, so that's news to me
Avatar
honestly I don't know why people still take the ACLU seriously

Does anyone have a better graphic handy for these people? Might as well offer it up so they can delete the misinfo graphic for the correct one.

We have a handy guide in PDF form that you can print and fold up in your pocket, which can also be turned into infographics: ssd.eff.org/files/ssd/wy...

I took screenshots and OCRed these (alt text cut it off). If anyone reading wants to tidy this up into a single page, please do so so that people can save it to share and delete the misinfo infographic.

The EFF doc works well for printing and putting in a wallet or something but I did make this to laminate a few and leave laying around if that's closer to what you were thinking. Wouldn't be hard to make it black/white for cheap printing

My work here is done. *flies away*

"You just like, scanned it? You just go around scanning QR codes dropped by people who fly off into the night? What is WRONG with you!"

If I'm doing all that to protesting I'm not doing all that and bringing a flip phone that can call and text.
