IIRC, she was referencing the “AI Assistant” that is now a part of Adobe Acrobat.

“At first glance, the Recall feature seems like it may set the stage for potential gross violations of user privacy. Despite reassurances from Microsoft, that impression persists for second and third glances”

Bet you a dollar the "encrypted" screenshots will be accessible by cops

If it's accessible by cops, it will sooner or later be accessible by crooks

This is true, but in general I'm more worried about the cops

"Recall won't take snapshots of InPrivate web browsing sessions in Microsoft Edge" If you can't get people to use your junk, create horrific spyware only your junk is exempt from.

"I don't know who told HR about the Recall project, but they just sent me a memo saying we shouldn't take pictures of our junk."

Is this a good time to ask that age old question, "Is this year the year of linux desktop?"

Via non-AI web search like the old days: Completely turn off Recall feature on Windows 11 To disable Recall on Windows 11, use these steps: Open Settings on Windows 11. Click on Privacy & security. Click the Recall & snapshots page. Turn off the “Save snapshots” toggle switch.

The default setting for such an invasive feature should be OFF, with pop ups & demos to get users to opt-in. But, I think collecting data without acknowledged consent is violating user privacy. I understand I’m in the minority here.

That some billionaires got obsessed with climate-burning, not-actually-intelligent 💩 and are now foisting it on all of us is a great reason to tax them into oblivion

Microsoft sent me a message saying that I need to buy a new computer because mine won't update to Windows 11. I'm glad it won't and probably need to start looking for a new operating system.

"Therefore, we will inflict it anyway."

I can only imagine what corporate ICT teams will think about this from a security perspective.

They'll likely be told they're not paid to think.

Filling up the hard drive with screenshots, oh joy.

"Hey, Clippy, what is spyware?"

How do we turn it off? Like, forever?

Use Apple or Linux.

Luckily, there's an easy way out: "To use Recall, users will need to purchase one of the new "Copilot Plus PCs" powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chips, which include the necessary neural processing unit (NPU)."

Avatar
Yeah, it might be more generalized later. But at least we don't have to panic right away.
Avatar
well, that's not a security nightmare at all or anything
Why is this so applicable these days?!

That's the whole argument for a well-rounded education - one that includes humanities. Most STEM experts spend relatively little time studying history/social sciences/ethics. We see and suffer from misguided technologists & their questionable decisions everyday.
And kids who major in engineering raise hell that they have to take 3-5 literature/humanities classes as it is
Everyone use linux, it's easy now

"To use Recall, users will need to purchase one of the new "Copilot Plus PCs" powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chips, which include the necessary neural processing unit (NPU)." oh noooooes, I won't be able to use it, it seems... what a shaaaaaame...

When I started at my remote gig, we had to use a time tracker that took screenshots periodically, presumably to prove we were realio, trulio working on the task at hand. Thankfully, they phased it out. It's nice to be trusted.

How much storage space does this take up?

I'm only curious to see how this plays out because the amount of porn this thing is gonna grab will be off the charts.
Hey, maybe they’re hiring…

Yeaaaaahhhhh......I'm just gonna stay with Linux thanx....
