Dark City (1998) is on Tubi right now and it's fucking great, I can't believe I hadn't seen this film before. I normally fall asleep next to my dog while trying to watch movies at night but I watched this one all the way through without even yawning, strongly recommended
i recall a review that said that it was unfortunate the Matrix came out around the same time on one hand, but on the other it was described as the Matrix's introverted and more cerebral sibling
It came out before, didn’t compete, but didn’t get anything like the hard sell that The Matrix got. It was a great cinema experience, but very much a nerd’s cult film from the outset. I love it.
Definitely one of best films I've seen in a long time. It was always on my radar but I never got around to buying/renting it back in the physical media days, and up until today I couldn't find it streaming anywhere
I was legit looking for Dark City recently to rewatch, and couldn't find it! It's been so long since I've watched it. Looking forward to seeing it again. I remember Rufus being great. Thanks for sharing.
I loved it! I went in completely blind and was completely taken aback by how good it was. I wasn't expecting that kind of style, atmosphere and writing, what a good time
Among all the things I enjoyed, the writing stood out. The scenes were really quick and snappy and kept the intrigue building as I puzzled everything together.
Oh, that’s definitely an underrated masterpiece! (And the same way I feel about Strange Days)!
If I remember correctly there’s also a different ending in director’s cut, but I watched so long ago, I guess it’s time to rewatch!
It’s very good and still relevant as hell! And of course, a killer soundtrack and amazing esthetics (no, they didn’t pay me to say all these things! 😂)
This and The Crow were absolute bangers. I don't know what happened after this, because from I, Robot forward, Alex Proyas' filmography just... disappointing, to say the least.
I really loved the German Expressionism vibe they pulled off with the set design, and I’m very sad it didn’t catch on with other movies in the late ‘90s-early 2000s.
